With the celebration of The 200th Anniversary of Trafalgar in 2005 and the continuing popularity of books by Captain Marryat, Dudley Pope, Alexander Kent, Patrick O’Brian and C.S. Forester, many of the latter’s ‘Hornblower’ stories being produced for television in a £14m series, it seemed useful and appropriate to provide some detail about the ships and the crews, the ‘men-of-war’ of Nelson’s times, to expand the horizons and understandings of today’s ‘Nelsons’ who may never have the opportunity to command anything greater than the remote control of a television set.
