has held its an-nual newspaper sale each allor the past 19 years. Each edi-tion has had a theme, and orthis year’s, we asked studentsand graduates rom Colum-bus City Schools (CCS) to com-plete the ollowing sentence:“I Know I Can…”Elementary school studentscompleted the sentence bydrawing pictures o what theywant to be when they grow up. Middle and high schoolstudents nished the sentence with written thoughts abouttheir post secondary aspirations. And CCS alumni used thesentence to give advice about the importance o attendingcollege. As president o the Board o Directors o
i Kw ica
, I complete the sentence as ollows: “
i Kw i ca
isstrategically positioned to carry out its mission, promisingto inspire, enable and support Columbus City Schools stu-dents in pursuing and completing a college degree.” Wemade this commitment in our ounding year, 1988, and weproudly stand by our promise today.Conronting dicult economic pressures during the pastyear has been challenging or everyone, and
i Kw i ca
is no dierent. Fundraising has been dicult, and the stock market returns have been less than positive. However, likemany other organizations, we implemented cost-cuttingmeasures and otherwise trimmed our budget. Most im-portantly, we have taken these steps without reducingthe benets and services provided to our customers - CCSstudents and their amilies.Last year, as we celebrated our 20th Anniversary,
i Kwi ca
worked diligently to carry out the second o a three-year strategic plan. Now in our nal year, we are in the pro-cess o implementing a progressive and orward thinkingaction-plan that will serve a new generation o well-pre-pared CCS students and their amilies and keep
i Kw ica
on the cutting edge o college access programs or thenext 20 years and beyond. In the upcoming school year,
i Kw i ca
will embark on new and innovative programming or current CCS stu-dents, as well as or district graduates attending college. The organization will continue providing all second grad-ers with a copy o the
i Kw i ca
book with coincidingactivities to help reinorce the book’s message. The orga-nization will also market its new bilingual edition (English/Spanish) across the country. With support rom the districtas well as community partners,
i Kw i ca
will beginshiting a greater emphasis on middle-school age, collegeadvising activities in the 2009-2010 academic year. Collegeprogramming and advising services or CCS high schoolstudents, graduates and their amilies will continue, includ-ing college admissions and nancial aid assistance, as wellas awarding the Last Dollar Grant. Moreover,
i Kw i ca
hopes to oer several larger grants to graduating CCS stu-dents in an eort to provide greater motivation so studentswill be better prepared to succeed in college. And or therst time ever,
i Kw i ca
has ormed an alumni councilto better engage with CCS graduates who have been im-pacted by our service. The council will serve as ambassa-dors or the organization, helping to increase its visibilityand volunteer involvement and will look or ways to helpincrease nancial support rom a new generation o lead-ers in central Ohio. The 2009-2010 academic year is a critical one or
i Kw ica,
but never has there been a more ervent commitmentto help Columbus City School students enter and succeedin college. Now more than ever,
i Kw i ca
will inspirestudents to dream big and support them as they work hardto achieve their goals.Dream Big. Work Hard. We’ll help. Will you?
