The False Self as Puffery and Shame

The False Self as Puffery and Shame

Ratings: (0)|Views: 16|Likes:
Published by Jane Gilgun
Shame affects the quality of life of everyone. Shame is a sense of the self as defective, unworthy, and irredeemable. When we are in a state of shame, we become self-centered. This results in our being emotionally unavailable to others that can take the form of preoccupation, withdrawing, picking on others, aggression toward others and animals, and avoidance behaviors. Drinking, taking drugs, over-eating, gambling, and spending money for things that give us a boosts are also reactions to shame. This article explores what shame is and how it affects our lives in ways we don’t often realize. Self-puffery can be a reaction to shame, but some self-puffery is related to entitlement to take what you want without regard for others. This kind of self-puffery has nothing to do with shame. It’s selfishness and obliviousness.
