NEW YORK STATE GRADES 3-8 ELA AND MATH ASSESSMENTS OPT-OUT I have received several inquires from parents who intend to have their children refuse to take the New York State Assessments for Grades 3-8 in ELA and math. These tests are scheduled to be administered in April and May. The following are some frequently asked questions (FAQs): What is the Districts position on refusing the test(s)? As always, the District is committed to honoring parental requests concerning their childrens education within the confines of the law and the regulations of the State Education Department. What do I have to do to refuse the test? Start with sending in your refusal letter to your childs teacher or principal. What happens to my child on the day(s) of the test(s)? Students who have submitted a refusal letter will be placed in an alternative location on the testing day and given the opportunity to take the test, as required by law. Students who refuse to take the test at that time will have the test taken away and will be allowed to read quietly. Will refusing the test(s) exclude my child from special programs (honors classes, AIS, AP Classes)? No. We do not use them to make any decisions about students. Wont these test grades follow my child through High School? No. They do not appear on a report card or on a transcript.
