Design by Measuring Assignment

Follow the steps below to practice the measuring techniques you just learned about.

1. Do this assignment in your Engineering Notebook – you may use an eraser on this work.
Use the techniques and methods you were taught in class.
2. To keep track of where you are at in the steps of this assignment, in our Engineering
Notebook, off to one side, write the numbers from 1 to 22.
3. Draw a line through each number as you complete the steps.
4. Draw a rectangle using the dimensions given below. The box must have 90-degree
corners (must be Square).
A B

4 ½”

C D
5 ½”
5. Label the corners.
6. Measure line AB and divide it in half. Measure that length from point A on line AB and
make a mark. Call it point E.
7. Using the same length measure from point C on line CD. Label this point F.
8. Connect points EF, CE and DE.
9. You will now make parallel lines. Measure on line AC from point C every 3/4” and make
a mark. There should be 5 marks. Starting at point C, call the points G. H, I, J and K.
Measure on line BD from point D every 3/4” and make a mark. There should be 5 marks.
Starting at point B, call the points L. M, N, O, and P.
10. Make parallel lines with line CD by connecting lines GP, HO, IN, JM, and KL.
11. Make three circles. Make the first circle 1/8” diameter on EF where it intersects with
lines GP, call the center of the circle Q. Make the second circle 1/4” diameter on EF
where it intersects with lines IN, call the center of the circle R. Make the third circle 1/2”
diameter on EF where it intersects with lines KL, call the center of the circle S.
12. On line CD, measure over 7/16” from C. Call this point T. Connect T with S.
13. Where TS hits lines GP, HO, IN and JM make x’s.
14. On line CD, measure over 7/16” from D. Call this point U. Connect U with S.
15. Where US hits lines GP, HO, IN and JM make x’s.
16. On line CD, measure over 1 1/4” from C. Call this point V. Connect V with R.
17. Where VR hits lines GP and HO make x’s.
18. On line CD, measure over 1 1/4” from D. Call this point W. Connect W with R.
19. Where WR hits lines GP, HO and make x’s.
20. Count your x’s and circles there should be 15.
21. Have a teacher check your Design. While waiting, go to the next step.
22. You may choose to do the other measuring design on the next page or go to the web site
http://www.rsinnovative.com/rulergame/index.html and play the Ruler Game, or go to

Assessment
This assignment will be recorded when it is completed correctly. You will receive and “X” to
indicate you completed it.
