REPORT ON PROSECUTION OF FGM CASES IN KENYA
1. According to Report submitted today by the Inspector-General of Police (IG) to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) a total of
FGM cases have been taken to Court from
todate. 2. Of those cases,
are pending before Court;
withdrawals. 3. The reported cases arise from the following Counties:
Narok; Kitui; West-pokot; Meru; Tharaka-Nithi; Embu; Elgeyo Marakwet; Kisii; Migori; Marsabit and Kiambu.
4. Some of the challenges identified by the IG in investigating and prosecuting fgm cases include:
Non-reporting of the crime;
Cultural beliefs and attitudes;
Non-cooperation with Law Enforcement Agencies;
Fear and intimidation of complainants, witnesses and victims;
Lack of information on the dangers of fgm.
