'We're not here to fight for a bigger share of the pie.

We're here to bake A bigger pie.'
President'sMessage;
With a salute to ChristopherColumbus and a bow to themany Hispanics inProvidence, HispanicHeritage Month is once againupon us.Commencing on September15, with Independence Dayfor Central America andending on October 15, thefour weeks of celebration willbe pack with social eventsand festivals honoringHispanic contributions toAmerica.Hispanic Heritage Month isthe occasion for the Latinocommunity to come togethernot only to celebrate theiraccomplishments, but to sharewith America -at-large ourdiversity and pride as apeople.Hispanic Heritage Monthclimaxes with el dia de laRaza or Columbus Day whichcelebrates the fusion of twocultures, the EuropeanSpaniard with the IndigenousPeople of the Americas.Hispanic-Americans can lookback with pride andacknowledge the impact thatSpanish explorers had overthe Americas and the birth of an empire.In many ways, one monthseems paltry when youconsider the contributionsmade by Hispanics over thecourse of 500 hundred yearsof history. From the earliestmission towns to modern-dayMiami, the vitality of theLatino community has alwaysbeen evident. And as ourpresence grows we are slowlyinfusing America with ourculture even as we in turnbecome more American. Wewill change the face of America even as we will bechanged by our newhomeland.
