PATOFISIOLOGY
The exact etiology of myoma uteri until now unknown. Suspected estrogen stimulation was instrumental to the occurrence of myoma uteri. This hypothesis is supported by the presence of uterine myomas that are found in the low incidence of reproductive age and the age of menopause. Ichimura said that ovarian hormones believed to stimulate uterine growth due to an increased incidence after menarche. In pregnancy the greater the growth of this tumor, but decreases after menopause.

Pukka and colleagues reported that uterine myoma tissue contains more estrogen receptors when compared with normal myometrium. Uterine myoma growth varies between individuals. This difference is related to the number of estrogen receptors and progesterone receptors.
