MARCH MADNESS GAME

Gary Irwin reported on the c u r r e n t standings of those involved in the March Madness basketball game. Kevin Reneau has surged into the lead. However, Cliff Dochterman and Gary Irwin have two teams in the final four. Bottom line is that if Wisconsin gets at least one win, Gary wins; if not, Kevin wins. Anyone have the music to On Wisconsin?

Thank You Marv and Joyce!!

The Thank God It Is The Last Friday Of The Month Social for March was held at Marv and Joyce Ellenbergs home last Friday. The party was well attended and we all had a very good time. Thank you Marv and Joyce for opening up your lovely home for this event. Give President Nora a call if you are willing to host this event in future months.

Brad Howard with Cliff Dochterman and Nora Avelar accepting the clubs $8,000 donation to Polio collected at our recent Nite at the Races event.

Brad began his talk reviewing Rotarys involvement in the eradication of polio over the past thirty years. He described the effects of polio and how the development of vaccines as well as the aggressive immunization programs have reduced polio throughout the world. Brad identified the three types of Polio and that different vaccines have been used to fight the disease. He reviewed how polio has been eradicated in India but new cases are still present in several countries in Africa and Asia. He stated it is important for Rotary and other organizations to stay involved to make sure that the job is completed. Reinfection of an area can occur and supplemental immunization programs are necessary. Political unrest and war in Pakistan have also got in the way of getting the job completed. He mentioned that the goal is to get away from using the oral, live virus vaccine and revert back to the injections once the disease is controlled. The current infrastructure built up for the PolioPlus effort should be used to fight other health problems in the future. When Rotary finishes this campaign we should all remember that we were a part of the solution!!

THE EDITORS COMMENTS

I would like to thank Al Simonsen for sharing the Rotaplast experiences of his nephew/godson Mark Moore. I found both the descriptions and pictures of the mission to Guatemala to be quite incredible. What a privilege to be associated with an organization that can bring help to children like this in all parts of the world. I, for one, am looking forward to the program by Brian th Walker on April 15 .

Mystery Rotarian
President Nora introduced two mystery Rotarians this week. We all knew that Cliff Dochterman reminds us of Jimmy Stewart, but who knew that Debbie Roessler walked on a glacier!!
