Until recently, people generally associated learning with theeducation they received at school and university. Today, Eur-ope is undergoing a major transformation to become a world-leading knowledge based society. This means that knowledge, and the innovation it sparks, are the EU’s most valuable assets. The Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP) supports individuals atall stages of their lives to pursue stimulating opportunities forlearning across Europe.
A range of mobility activities within the Programm
e offers pupils,
students, trainees, adults, professionals, professors and teach-ers at all levels of Education and Vocational Training and in com-panies a unique chance to obtain education, training and workexperience in a foreign country. Thus, they acquire new expert-ise and professional skills and in addition develop their cap-acities to adapt to new environments. Mobility activities have amajor priority and are supported in all of the four sectoral pro-grammes of the Lifelong Learning Programme, i. e. Comenius,Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci and Grundtvig. One of the key effects of the mobility actions is the mutualunderstanding they create among the education and trainingsystems of the countries participating in the LLP, which helpsto improve education structures and supports cooperation for aEuropean Area of Education and Training. In order to ensure quality, the European Commission has estab-lished a European Quality Charter for Mobility, which providesrecommendations to the organisations responsible for mobility. The exchange lifespan includes preparatory measures, imple-mentation and follow-up – three stages that must be consideredas a whole for a project of quality.I am pleased to present the outstanding mobility projects andcourses included in this brochure to demonstrate the potentialand positive effects of mobility. These examples of good practicesat European level can provide inspiration to potential projectcoordinators and course developers in mobility actions. Theyshould encourage European citizens to seize the opportunitiesthat mobility in Europe has to offer to improve knowledge andskills, enlarge horizons and meet new friends and colleaguesthroughout Europe.
