Chiropractors Mobilize to Protect Childrens Rights

Manitoba, Canada has become
the focal point of a heated battle
by the chiropractic profession
to protect the rights of children
to receive the beneits of
chiropractic care. Over the past
year several anti-chiropractic
forces have started a false smear
campaign to gain publicity by
trying to say that chiropractic
care may be dangerous. This
lies in the face of all evidence
showing that chiropractic has
always been among the safest
health care professions.
In spite of facts to the contrary the
Canadian smear campaign has
been effective and accomplished
their irst goal in getting the
government of Manitoba to
discontinue
chiropractic
coverage for children up to the
age of 19. This move effectively
forces many children away from
a natural choice of chiropractic
and toward drugs or surgery. In
a statement dated May, 10, 2002,
one of the worlds renowned
chiropractic pediatric experts,
Dr. Maxine McMullen Vice
President of the International
Chiropractors Association (ICA)
and founder and president of
the ICA Council of Chiropractic
Pediatrics stated, This decision
is not based on science or good
health care practice. Chiropractic
care has been proven to be

safe and effective for children

and people of all ages. This
decision is based in fear and not
in fact. The world chiropractic
community will mobilize to take
those steps necessary to see
that fairness and open access
for all people prevail.
Other chiropractic organizations
have also begun to mobilize.
In a release dated May, 8, 2002
Dr. Jeanne Ohm, Secretary of
the International Chiropractic
Pediatric Association asked
all their members to, Please
e-mail the Premier of Manitoba,
the Honorable Gary Doer with
a short, professional e-mail on
behalf of chiropractic care for
children.
In the 1970s the American
Medical Association was sued
for restraint of trade and antitrust
activities. In that famous Wilk
vs. AMA suit, the AMA lost, and
had to publicly admit wrongdoing
in their journals as well as cease

any illegal and unlawful activity

against
chiropractic.
Since
then the AMA has been barred
from the types of false smear
campaigns in the US that have
now taken place in Canada.
The chiropractic community
and the patients we serve are
continuing to mobilize to reverse
this situation. It is our belief that

everyone should have

open access to chiropractic care
if that is the form of health care
they choose. Canada is taking
the irst steps to protect their

about Hepatitis C
Hepatitis* C is a virus, or
infection, that causes liver
disease and inlammation of
the liver. Viruses can cause
sickness. For example, the lu
is caused by a virus. People
can pass viruses to each other.
Inlammation is swelling
that occurs when tissues of
the body become injured or
infected. Inlammation can
cause organs to not work
properly.
Who gets hepatitis C?
Anyone can get hepatitis C,
but those more likely to are
people who

were born to a mother

with hepatitis C

are in contact with

blood or infected needles at
work

have had more than

one sex partner in the last 6
months or have a history of
sexually transmitted disease

are on kidney dialysis

the process of iltering wastes
and extra water from the
body by means other than the
kidneys

are infected with HIV

have injected illegal

drugs

have had tattoos or

body piercings

work or live in a prison

had a blood transfusion

or organ transplant before
July 1992

have hemophilia and

received clotting factor before
1987
Also, men who have sex with
men are more likely to get
hepatitis C.
What are the symptoms of
hepatitis C?
Most people do not have any
symptoms until the hepatitis
C virus causes liver damage,
which can take 10 or more

years to happen. Others

may have one or more of the
following symptoms:

feeling tired

muscle soreness

upset stomach

stomach pain

fever

loss of appetite

diarrhea

dark-yellow urine

light-colored stools

yellowish eyes and skin,

called jaundice
When symptoms of hepatitis
C occur, they can begin 1 to
3 months after coming into
contact with the virus. See
a doctor right away if you
or a child in your care has
symptoms of hepatitis C.
How is hepatitis C diagnosed?
A blood test will show if you
have hepatitis C. Blood tests
are done at a doctors ofice
or outpatient facility. A blood
sample is taken using a needle
inserted into a vein in your arm
or hand. The blood sample is
sent to a lab to test for hepatitis
C.
If you are at higher risk of
getting hepatitis C, get tested.
Many people with hepatitis C
do not know they are infected.

A blood test will show if you

have hepatitis C.
Your doctor may suggest
getting a liver biopsy if chronic
hepatitis C is suspected. A liver
biopsy is a test to take a small
piece of your liver to look for
liver damage. The doctor may
ask you to stop taking certain
medicines before the test. You

may be asked to fast for 8

hours before the test.
During the test, you lie on a
table with your right hand
resting above your head.
Medicine is applied to numb the
area where the biopsy needle
will be inserted. If needed,
sedatives and pain medicine
are also given. The doctor uses
a needle to take a small piece of
liver tissue. After the test, you
must lie on your right side for
up to 2 hours. You will stay 2
to 4 hours after the test before
being sent home.
A liver biopsy is performed at
a hospital or outpatient center
by a doctor. The liver sample
is sent to a special lab where a
doctor looks at the tissue with a
microscope and sends a report
to your doctor.
How is hepatitis C treated?
Hepatitis C is usually not
treated unless it becomes
chronic. Chronic hepatitis
C is treated with medicines
that slow or stop the virus
from damaging the liver.
Your doctor will closely watch
your symptoms and schedule
regular blood tests to make
sure the treatment is working.
Medicines
for
Chronic
Hepatitis C
Chronic hepatitis C is most
often treated with a medicine
combination that attacks the
hepatitis C virus. Treatment
may last from 24 to 48 weeks.
Today, newer treatments with
medicine for chronic hepatitis
C are appearing quickly. Talk
with your doctor if you have
questions about treatment.
Talk with your doctor before
taking other prescription
medicines
and
over-thecounter medicines.
How can I avoid getting
hepatitis C?
You can protect yourself and
others from getting hepatitis C
if you

do not share drug

needles and other drug
materials

do not donate blood or

blood products

wear gloves if you have

to touch another persons
blood or open sores

do not share or borrow

a toothbrush, razor, or nail
clippers

make sure any tattoos

or body piercings you get are
done with sterile tools

tell your doctor and

your dentist if you have
hepatitis C

use a condom during

sex
A vaccine for hepatitis C does
not yet exist.
Do not share drug needles
and other drug materials.

hepatitis C virus?
See your doctor right away
if you think you have been
in contact with the hepatitis
