f : x x2 2x, x

g : x 2x + 3
x
(i) Find the range of f and state, with a reason, whether f has an inverse
[3]
(ii) Show that the equation gf(x) = 0 has no real solution and state the domain

6. The line l has equation r = j + k + s(ii 2jj + k). The plane p has the equation
x + 2y + 3z = 5
(i) Show that the line l lies in the plane p
[2]
(ii) A second plane is perpendicular to the plane p, parallel to the line l and contains the
point with the position vector 2i + j + 4k. Find the equation of this plane, giving your
answer in the form ax +by +cz = d
