Introduction to Mass Communication
MCOM111
CREATE A MAGAZINE PROJECT
worth 300 points
THE GROUP AND THE PRESENTATION

Work in groups of up to four (4) people. You can work individually if you so chose.

Submit your group members to me no later than Thurs., March 20.

Formal oral presentations will take place the last two weeks of the semester: Tues., April 22 ~ Thurs., April 24 ~ Tues., April 29 ~ Thurs., May 1I will assign presentation dates and times. You must appear at the time and date indicated.Depending upon the number of groups, it will then be ascertained how long eachpresentation must be.

Everyone gets the same grade on this project in a group unless team members cometo me privately to let me know another member is not rising to the occasion anddoing their share. Contact me in person or via email – but you must do so before thepresentation I dislike people who try to ride off of other people’s hard work.
THE WRITTEN REPORT/ANALYSIS
Concept
:

 What is this magazine about?

 What is the
editorial need
for this concept? Why do you think it will work? Why is it needed?

Does this magazine take a
 point of view
?

Of course, the
name
and why it was chosen.
Readership Potential:

 What are the
demographics
of your audience?
Age, gender, religion, ethnicity, income, education level, lifestyle, opinions.

What types of things does your readership like to read?

What types of things does your readership like to do?

How targeted is it?
Editorial Content/Layout & Design

 What is the
look and feel
of this magazine?

 What are its
dimensions
? The
numbers of pages
generally run?

 What kind of
stories
will you include? What types of
art
? Give five examples of editorial and art that would accompany the articles. You don’t need to write,

create, layout and actually design these, rather explain it in detail – if you sochose to do a layout design, all the better.

Design
the
logo
of course.
Circulation
:

Print only
? Online only? Both? TV version too? What is your estimatedcirculation radius and run number? What is the cost per issue? Per year?
Financing

 Where does it get its
start-up dollars
? Are you part of a mega-conglomerate?Self funded? Philanthropically funded? Is this magazine not available onnewsstands and rather is a perk to membership, such as
 National Geographic
?

Do you sell
ads
? Is it ad-free? Do you sell positions in your web version? If a TV  version exists is it pre-packaged with ads or do you just sell the program todistributors or directly to the broadcaster/cablecaster network?
Promotion/Advertising/Public Relations

How will you
 promote
this magazine? How will people know you exist? How doyou intend to build readership/viewership for the way this is distributed? Willyou advertise in any media? Which ones? Where? Are there freebees? Giveaways?Promotion through event creation? Couponing?
 Why
have you selected theroutes for advertising and public relations that you did?
How to Set Up the Written Report
Set this up with the six (6) subheads listed above. Type the questions in, and then answerthem. Make the document aesthetically pleasing – it *matters* to me. Do NOT submittext with typos. Proofread, then proofread again and THEN, proofread AGAIN.
THE ORAL REPORT

Time to deliver will be ascertained after we know how many people/how many groups there are in this class.

DO NOT READ
from your written report – give a good overview; a goodsummation. Split the presentation oration between class members as you see fit.

Provide as much
 visuals
as possible; cover designs, editorial designs.

Prepare a
one-sheet overview
that can be distributed in class prior to yourpresentation.
Make 40 copies
.

 Your
written report must be handed on the day you present
, after thepresentation. It will not be accepted at any other time... Re: the length, as long and as good as it needs to be.
