being26,Christmas
is
almost
here,
and
it
hasbeen
snowing
all
day.Right
now
we
have
inchesandareexpecting2-3
feet
before
it
stops.
Exams
are
finishedand
we
bothpassedwithoutaproblem.
The
kids
havebeenplayinginthe
snow
all
morningandlove
 e
have
asmallsledthat
was
giventous
by
a
French
friend
and
so
we
are
able
to
pull
themupand
down
the
streets.
I
also
plan
to
take
the
sled
groceryshopping
this
afternoon.
Christmas
will
come
with
manymixed
emotions
this
year.
Sadness
at
the
separation,
excitement
because
it
s
Christmas,
and
much
joy
because
we
arein
the
will
ot
boa.
Tears
fill
my
eyes
as
I
type
this
letter
butthey
are
tearsof
JoyIcan
assure
you.
More
tears
will
come
in
thedays
ahead
but
weknow
you
will

we

tragedy
beganonawarmevening.Nov.23,whilemanyofthe
missionaryfamilies
inBenin
gatheredatthe
American
RecreationCenterin
Coionou
forfellowship.Bartelsrecounted.Theadultswereinside
andonthebackporchwhilemanyofthe
children
splashedintheswimmingpool.
WhenBartelswenttorounduphis
children
forthetrip
home,
he
found10-year-old
Ch^dra
playing
with
other
missionary
childrenatoneendofthepool.But2-year-old
Victoriahadslippedunnoticedintotheotherendofthe
poolanddrowned.
Barrelsjumpedintothepoolandattemptedtorevivethe
child,but 1knewshewasgone. hesaid. I
knew
therewasnothingwecould
do.
Carmelasobbed
as
she
watchedherhusbandbreathe
into
the
child's
mouth.
As
she
cried,
a
verse
she
had
taughtherBiblestudygroupthatweek
came
tomind:
 For
thegloryofGod. JesussaidofLazarusinJohn
11:4,
 That
theSonofGodmightbeglwified.
TheBartelsessaidGodhasministeredtothemduring
theirtimeofgriefandshownthemnewopportunitiesfor
ministryinBenin.
About250
people,including
many
unchurched
neighbors,attendedVictoria'sfuneralservicesunderatentinthefamily'sbackyard.Suchservicesneverareheld
for
children
inWestAfrica.Mrs.
Barrels
explained.With
thehighinfant-mortalityrateparents trytoforgetthe
death
and
goon.
They
stay
hiddisn
in
ihe
house
to
mourn.
For

funeral

Throughthisexperience,theAfricanchurchofabout400membersfoundawaytoministertothemissionaries
who
so
often
had
ministered
to
them.
After
the

nightdrowning,hedidn'tfeellikegoingtochurch
