brother

born, and
thus
made

appear
that
he
was
native born.
Therefore,
it
will
be
still
more interestingand entertaining to trace
the
genealogy
of
the
man
wh
o
did
not
want
to
recall
it
for
himself.
A
citizen ofNew
York State
has
ascer-
tained
all
of
the
facts
and here
relates
them:
Almost
a
century
ago
there
lived
in
Ballymena,
County
Antrim,
Ireland,
a
Scotchman named
Gavin
MacArthur.
He
had
a
wif
e
and
s
everalchildren, and
hademiarated
from
Scotland,
onaccount of
a
family
dif-ficulty,
arising
from.
his

embraced
the Protestant

and
relatives were of
the
Roman
Catholic
faith.
Shortly
after
his
arrival
in
Ireland
his
religious
zeal caus
ed him
to
change
his
family
name
from
MacArthurto
Arthur.

understood
that
he

distinguish
his
branch
of
the
family from
thatofthe
Roman
Catholic
branch.
Inthe year
1796, a
son
was
born
tothis
Gavin
Arthur,
and
hewas
named
William
Arthur,
in
honor
of William of
Oran
cre
b .
This boy
was
educated
at
wh
at was
then
known
as
the
Blue School,
in Belfast.
He
simply
acquir
ed a
common
scho
ol
education.
On
leaving
school,
in
the
ye
ar

heemigrated
in a
sailing

from
Derry,Ireland,to
Three
Rivers,

Canada.
It

he
