Writer’s Workshop Update...
We now have books tosupport our spiral!
Hurray! The books are here. The Booksource order arrived 2-weeks ago and the TAs and I havebeen busily organizing the booksfor classroom use. The grades 3-5teachers each received a wideselection of books to supportteaching the Lucy Calkins Units of Study. Not only did we order thebasic “Anchor Texts” mentioned tosupport each unit, we also orderedbooks specifically for grades 3, 4and 5- which we are calling“Mentor Texts”. Some of thebundled sets include: Launching,Breathing Life into Essays, GoodEndings, Narrative Procedure andCharacter Traits.Looking through the books, and realizing how many we nowhave, I think it will take time todetermine which grade levelutilizes which book and for whatskill. However, once we do that,we will again be able tostrengthen the spiral formed by theunits of study and be certain weare differentiating our teaching. For now, teachers are asked totry and dig into the texts as muchas possible and especially toencourage students to read themwith “writer’s eyes”.The only disappointment...
Fireflies
by Julie Brinkloe was notone of the books in the order. Thistext is one of the best, and I’mhopeful we can order it as a singlecopy through Amazon this year.
