first became aware of Cam Kennedys art in the early 1980s, when I was co-writing Judge Dredd scripts with John Wagner. Cam was working on another 2000 AD property, a future war story, and we were really impressed with his clean art, great storytelling, and chunky machinery. As Dredd was the comics major character, we always tried to get the top artists working on it, so we asked the alien editor (The Mighty Tharg) if he could switch Cam to illustrating our scripts. The answer soon came back that Cam wasnt interested. That summer we met Cam for the first time at a comics convention. We asked him why hed turned down Dredd, as we thought his art was perfect for Mega-City One and its constant violence. Cam was surprised; it turned out that Tharg was so happy with his work on the other story, he hadnt bothered to ask if Cam would like a switch. When we asked him, he agreed immediately. It was the start of a long-lasting and very productive partnership... and to a deep friendship which still endures. Cam illustrated so many Dredd stories, I cant even remember them all, but special mention should be made of the Kenny Who? series. John and I were starting to work for US publishers, and Cam agreed to be artist on The Outcasts maxi-series. However, we suffered from a severe lack of communication from our editor (not an alien this time). John, Cam and I drew lots, and Cam flew to New York to sort out the problems. On his arrival in the hallowed halls of our publisher, he bumped into another editor and told him who he was. The editor replied Kenny Who? and went about his business. When Cam got back to the UK and told us of his experience, we just had to come up with a story based upon itand so the "Kenny Who?" series was born. John and I went on to work with Cam, both together and individually, on dozens of US comics, including The Outcasts, Batman/Judge Dredd team-up and Lobo: Unamerican Gladiators for DC, Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. for Marvel, and John and Cams singular take on the Star Wars characters for Dark Horse. Cam also provided the art for the adaptations of Kidnapped and Jekyll and Hyde which I scripted for Waverly Books. But Cam remains one of the all-time great Judge Dredd artists and (not many people know this) a fantastic cook. Enjoy reading this collection and, if youre very lucky, Cam might come round your house with one of his superb tomato salads. Alan Grant January 2014
