Top-earners at Ryerson can orget about a raisethis year. The university’s highest paid employeeshave had their salaries rozen with no cost o living adjustment. The wage reeze ollows a recommendation ear-lier this year rom the Ministry o Training, Colleg-es and Universities to put a cap on salary increasesor employees earning $150,000 or more per year.“My salary was one o those that was rozen inevery component,” said President Sheldon Levy, who earned $344,583 in the last academic year. According to Levy, the decision will only aecthim and members o Ryerson’s executive group, which made more than $1.19 million dollars col-lectively last year.Cuts to Ryerson’s operating budget were ex-pected to be ve per cent this year, but Tas Venet-sanopoulos, vice-president research and innova-tion, said this number is closer to three per cent. According to Venetsanopoulos, the cost o living adjustment normally matches the rate o infation, currently about two per cent. He said the money saved has instead been put towards student bur-saries, which were suering due to low interestrates.“This was the understanding that I had,” said Venetsanopoulos. In 2008, he was paid $301,843.Because all other salaries at Ryerson are ne-gotiated through collective bargaining only the wages o the school’s highest paid employees canbe capped. Adam Kahan, vice-president university ad-vancement, stressed that the salary reeze is notdue to a budget shortall at Ryerson.“It really has nothing to do with the budget,”said Kahan, the school’s top-earner who madearound $358,644 last year. “It has to do with op-tics.”Ryerson is one o the last schools in the prov-ince to announce a salary reeze. Following therecommendation by the ministry in early March, several schools announced salary reezes or theirtop executives, including the University o Toron-to, Queen’s and McMaster.

Ryerson and Loblaw Companies Limited areocially in talks about a partnership that wouldallow the university to house an athletic acility  within Maple Lea Gardens. Both Ryerson and Loblaw, the current ownero Maple Lea Gardens, made announcements onSept. 16 ater

published a series o articles about the possible venture. The building could contain both an athletic acility and grocery store.Ryerson president, Sheldon Levy, said Ryersonis still looking at other options while talks aboutthe property and unding continue.Levy has seen about ve blueprints outlining options or the interior o the Maple Lea Gardenssite.“To determine whether or not it was a suitablelocation there had to be drawings ,” said Levy.“There are lots and lots o options, each o them with a dierent price tag,” said Levy. “For sure we’re going to need help with any one o them.” An athletic reerendum passed in March when74 per cent o voters cast their votes in avour o aee increase or a new acility, eective upon itscompletion. Funding may also come rom gov-ernment and university undraising.“It’d be a great thing or the university, althoughI understand there’d be some nancial challeng-es,” said Toronto mayor, David Miller, who said thecity is unable to contribute nancially.Levy has made a unding application to theederal government, but reused to disclose theamount requested. Wherever the acility goes it will require univer-sity undraising, according to Adam Kahan, vicepresident university advancement. Ryerson is al-ready preparing specic undraising initiatives orthe possible Maple Lea Gardens site. The campaign may include naming opportu-nities, allowing individuals and corporations toname the acility, a rink, gym or court or millionso dollars, said Kahan. Companies would also beable to sponsor the acility without naming part o it. Admirers o the historic building could be tar-geted through sales o the arena’s original seatsand an online campaign asking or donations toassist with restoring the building to a unctioning arena.“I think anything to do with Maple Lea Gardens will be sold in a instant,” said Ivan Joseph, athlet-ics director.Joseph said town hall meetings will be held be-ore specic plans go ahead or the acility as anattempt to serve all students.“I want to make sure to talk to those who aren’tusing the [current] recreation and athletics centre,I want to know why,” said Joseph.

The ght to close Gould Street is nally over. Atleast or one year. A temporary Gould Street closure was con-rmed last week when Toronto community coun-cil rubber-stamped a year-long pilot project. The shutdown, slated or Spring 2010, is the re-sult o a partnership between Ryerson and the city o Toronto. The plan has the support o Kyle Rae,city councillor or Toronto Centre-Rosedale.To celebrate the announcement, the RyersonStudents’ Union (RSU) rolled tur down GouldStreet, closing it or over our hours on Sept. 22.Mayor David Miller, at Dundas Square the sameday, seemed amused by the surprise shutdown.“I’m responsible or running the city so I can’tapprove o any illegal activity no matter how un itis. But i I went to Ryerson I’d probably do the samething,” said Miller. The RSU’s tur stunt was cut short at noon aspolice arrived to open the street to trac. Ryersonadministration was notied o the event late lastnight by a press release sent out by Toby Whiteld,RSU vice-president nance and services. The temporary 2010 closure ullls one aspecto Ryerson’s Master Plan, a long-term vision orcampus development, which calls or a pedestri-an-riendly Gould Street. The city will orm a committee o Ryerson repre-sentatives with the transportation department togure out which parts o the street will be closed. Whiteld said Ryerson will continue to lobby dierent committees next year in an attempt tomake sure the closure is permanent.
