In November, 2009, Ohio voters will decide on whether to lift the prohibition on gaming in the state. Gaming -- often held out as a viable economic development strategy -- creates enormous hidden costs. In my close analysis of the economic effects of casinos in Louisiana, the strategy rarely works. In Ohio's case, the presence of casinos in surrounding jurisdictions will undermine any potential benefits.
Hiram College has completed an economic analysis of the proposal.
