Description

The scope of this article is narrow indeed as it is concerned with specific events which took place in
the contested region of Nagorno-Karabakh between 1993 and 1995. First, an outline of events is
presented in which the focus is on the foreign Mujahedin, primarily of Afghan origin, who fought
alongside Azeri forces in the Nagorno-Karabakh theatre of operations. The scarcity of sources, even
unreliable ones, will unfortunately make this section very light reading. The second part analyses
not only the role of the foreign Mujahedin in this particular conflict but also their possible impact
on future events and their role in the global Jihad which was slowly emerging during the mid-
1990s.
