ByChris Gilmour There seems to be many descriptions about Affiliate Marketing and all have the samemeaning. For many, Affiliate marketing is an ordinary home business done by everyday people on the internet. It has provided an extra source of income for many - evenreplaced their full time  jobs- and is a joint cooperative effort between merchants and the affiliate to market and sell a product online. It has been proven to be cost effective way of selling and delivers some amazing results to the merchant and affiliate. However, in a lotof cases, for the new affiliate, some might not be aware of how the affiliate world worksand they may make costly mistakes, meaning it has often been misunderstood.A big misconception about affiliate marketing is "selling". Although everyone knows thatthis is crux to the concept, it is also about providing a service, 24 hours a day if needs be.In addition, while the importance of advertising a certain product is not to be forgottenabout, advertising overall is like selling. Both selling and advertising aim for the finalgoal. The affiliate is compensated, in most cases financially, for every visitor that they refer toa merchant. Part of the condition maybe that the visitor has to purchase something fromthe merchant. Sometimes not - it may just be a lead or a visit to a certain website. However, for affiliate marketing to work there has to be two functional bodies - theaffiliate and the merchant. Both parties have their special function and will rely on eachother to do the necessary work. For the affiliate network, it will act as a third party for themerchant and the affiliate selling the product. The affiliate network will assist by providing the technology to deliver the merchant's campaigns and offers and in mostcases the payment to the affiliate from the merchant. They will also help to keep recordsof all sales and transactions completed. The website owner that completed the customer service, transactions and provides the product is the merchant. benefits to the merchantare many.As well as the merchant being the website owner, so can the affiliate. Many affiliates runtheir own websites which act as "portal" sites that direct the visitor/customer to themerchant. However, some affiliates just do pay per click campaigns with Google with profitable merchant sites. As mentioned before, Affiliate Marketing can help to generate a full-time income for theaffiliate if the affiliate wants to but it has to be understood that this is not an easy task toaccomplish and is what many affiliates may strive for. It is a perfect situation when itworks as it should however please be aware that it doesn't always. If both the Affiliateand the Merchant work correctly and how they should both sides can be profitable and benefit as well as the customer - even the affiliate program administrators as well.
