Registration ATHENEUM FALL INTENSIVES 2009
Wilderness Intensive
This year we will spend the first week training, doing seminars, safety, and studying thetheme of Wilderness Ethics. We will discuss minimal impact camping, impact of all kinds, and developing our own ethical standards and behaviors in the wild. The second weekwe will try to travel to an area where we can do some fishing, small game hunting, canoeing, exploring and studying. We hope to do an overnight winter camping for up to aweek in a semi remote wilderness area. Gear can be shared and borrowed so thatpurchases will be optional. We will establish a base camp and do hiking out from there, returning at night. We will make observations; do some tracking and animal studies, andhunting and trapping readings and discussions. If parents are amenable, we will do agun safety class and include closely supervised gun hunting on the trip. If not, we canuse archery and set snares etc. This year we will probably go to the Kenai Peninsulawhere we can fish and possibly canoe on the lakes if it still has not frozen. Most likelywe will be camping along the road system.
Toward Building a Community of Artisans
When individuals come together for a period of time with different passions or artisticprojects in hand, how is it that a sense of community develops? How are the musesbeckoned, discoveries made and inspiration sustained that benefit the whole group? What is the practice of the individual artisan that furthers the self and the whole? Theseare some of the questions that we will ask in this fall’s project oriented arts and craftingintensive. Seminars and texts will be provided. Students will need to think and planahead and write a proposal based on the following questions. Space is provided beneaththe registration form.1. We will take computers apart and rebuild them to see how tomodify or build them up from scratch. We will study what we are seeing on the desktopand what operating systems are. Then we will go more in depth with projectsprogramming. We do have guest speakers to come in to help with their expertise.
