super-sized denim tote

A gigantic tote is a fun and easy sewing project. This one is made out of apair of cast-off jeans combined with printed cotton fabric and sturdy brightorange straps. It has a hip, cozy style and plenty of space to pack all yourbelongings for that long weekend away.
materials:
 You need basic sewing tools including scissors, straight pins, hand sewingneedle, yardstick, tape measure, tailor’s chalk or a pencil, seam ripper,sewing machine and …- a pair of discarded adult sized jeans;
2 pieces of neon orange nylon webbing 2 cm x 65 cm long;
2 pieces 20 cm x 70 cm long printed cabbage rose cotton fabric for thetote’s sides;
2 pieces 20 cm x 75 cm and 2 pieces 40 cm x 48 cm printed country floralcotton fabric for the lining.
Note: Choose two cotton prints with contrasting colors, patterns or print dimensions to give your tote a charming style.
 
sewing instructions
CUT THE DENIM:
1)
Cut one leg off the jeans.
2)
Cut the leg open along theinseam. Press. Lay it open and flat,wrong side up, on a table.
3)
With a yardstick and pencil ortailor’s chalk, mark on the wrongside, a panel 40 cm wide x 48 cmhigh. Round out the two bottomcorners. Cut out the panel.
4)
Repeat with the other leg, so youhave two panels.SEW CABBAGE ROSE COTTON TO THEDENIM:
1)
Pin the two long strips (right sides facing) together, and sew with a 1cm seam allowance to form 1 long strip. Press seam. Align the seamwith the center, bottom point of one of the denim panels. With rightsides together, and edges aligned, pin together along edge. Gentlyease the rose printed cotton around the denim curved corners. Foldback any excess cotton print at the top edge.
2)
Baste 1 cm from the edge. Remove the straight pins. Machine stitchnext to the basting with a straightstitch. Press.
3)
Rpeat and sew the other denim panelto the other edge of the printedcotton. Press.MAKE THE LINING WITH THE COUNTRYFLORAL COTTON:
1)
Curve the bottom edges of thelining fabric panels the same asyour denim.
2)
Stitch your lining fabrics togetherthe same as you just stitchedtogether your denim. Press.
3)
With the wrong sides facing, slidethe lining inside the denim tote.
4)
Fold the excess length of thelining, about 5 cm, over the top edge of the denim tote. And pin italong the edge.
