Election 2009Dear Neighbor: This coming Tuesday, the voters of Westchester have a choice to make for CountyExecutive.

My choice is Andy Spano.

Yes, you read it right. I’m casting my vote forDemocrat Andy Spano, and I want you to know that I didn’t make this decisionlightly. My choice is Andy Spano because he is the right candidate for us.As your representative in the State Senate for over 20 years, I learned first-handhow important it is to have a County Executive who can bring people together. Weneed an innovative leader who can guide us through these tough fiscal times. Weneed someone who understands the fundamental interdependencies of our local,county, state and federal government, and someone who can deliver.Andy Spano has been that person.As our County Executive, Andy Spano has managed our government well. He hastransformed our county with new technology, new ideas and a steadfastcommitment to our safety and well being.Quite frankly, I have some very real concerns about an element in the RepublicanParty – both nationally and locally – that represents right wing politics to theextreme. Like you, I live here. I raised my children here and my granddaughter isgrowing up here in Westchester too.I’m a reasonable-minded voter and, like most residents, I consider myself amoderate. Unfortunately, we have witnessed Republican extremists emerge here inWestchester and take center stage.Make no mistake, with that extremist power will come intolerance. Intolerance of people who live different lifestyles and intolerance to a woman’s right to choose. That’s an intolerance that I will not tolerate.On Tuesday, I will be splitting my vote and supporting Andy Spano because he isright for us. I know Andy. He is hardworking, honest and sincere. He has managedthe County through the worst economic crisis we have seen in recent history, andhe has done a terrific job in the face of such unprecedented financial uncertainty.
