Blue Cat
An incomparable queen, gifted and beautiful to anextraordinary degree, once lived on an island to theEast. Her Kingdom flourished. Her ministers werehonest and her subjects were happy. Nearly athousand handsome suitors, all of noble birth, hadsought her hand, but Queen Ailla’s heart seemedmade of stone. The only living creature she ever graced with affection was her white cat, Velvetpaws, who habitually sat poised on a silken cushion in theroyal lap, enjoying endless caresses.Ignoring a succession of haughty, would-besuitors who looked on in envious fascination, QueenAilla would stroke Velvetpaws’ luxuriant fur by thehour murmuring endearments. One by one the suitorswithdrew, defeated by a blue-eyed cat.As is the manner of men everywhere, the peopleof Queen Aillas land took to imitating theisovereign by also keeping a favourite cat, and thusthe word ‘copycatcame into being. The fashion

developed until the island became a feline paradise. All human affection was lavished upon cats.Life continued in this way until one night QueenAilla dreamed a strange and powerful dream. In amysterious landscape she saw a blue cat with azureeyes. Around its neck hung a diamond-studded collar which flashed in the light. Blue Cat came close andgently rubbed his head against her cheek, purring . . .Queen Ailla woke with this image before her.She couldn’t get Blue Cat out of her mind. For daysshe wandered listlessly through the palace trying tofathom her vision. For the first time Velvetpaws wasneglected. Off in a corner he slept quietly anduncaressed upon his special cushion. In desperationQueen Ailla finally summoned a famous magicianwhose speciality was dream interpretation.‘What does it mean?’ she asked. ‘What must Ido?’The magician hesitated before answering. Hecoughed to clear his throat and shuffled his feet.‘I am afraid, your Royal Highness,’ he mumbledinto his beard, ‘I’m afraid,’ he continued gently, ‘thatthe dream means you must find a blue cat within ayear or the kingdom faces disaster.’

Last week me and Trouble-and-strife thought we had mice. Our two cats were scurrying around the kitchen for days. Turned out to be a squirrel visited us at night, rummaging in the cupboard under the sink for edibles. I yanked the skirting board off so our little tigers could reach in and now dear bushy tail is gone. Reminded me of my 'Cat May Look at a King'.
