The House Concept

The Williamsport Area High School is subdivided into three"Houses," each containing one-third of the students in each of thefour grade levels. The colors Blue, Gold, and Red serve to identifythe individual Houses, each having an enrollment of approximately675 students. Homerooms represent the nucleus of each House withC, D, and E "pods" being the core areas of the Blue, Gold, and RedHouses respectively.Although our building is large, the House concept creates a morepersonal atmosphere. It allows each student to closely identify with asmaller group of students within the total school population. Ninthgrade students are placed into freshman homerooms for theirtransition year. This transition program provides special supports tohelp the freshmen get a good start in their high school career. Fromtenth grade through their senior year students are, with fewexceptions, placed in the same upperclass homeroom if they havechosen not to join an activity homeroom.Under the House plan, the student will also have the same principaland guidance counselor each year.
