Strathmore Rural and Carseland Fire update

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor Slow but sure progress is taking place for the Strathmore Rural and Carseland Fireghters, in light of recent developments that left them without an operating contract with Wheatland County. The rst good news was the Standard Rural Fire Association had ratied the interim agreement with Wheatland County Council to provide re service in the Strathmore Rural and Carseland Fire Fighting Response Areas. Then on April 10, the county posted that they had recently appointed interim Deputy Fire Chiefs for both halls. I am pleased to advise that the Standard Rural Fire Fighting Association in conjunction with Wheatland County and the Strathmore and Carseland Fire Chief have appointed Mr. Mike Jakubiszyn as interim Deputy Fire Chief for the Strathmore Rural Fire Department, and Mr. Ryan Hauswirth as interim Deputy Fire Chief for the Carseland Fire Department, said Wheatland County Chief Administrative Ofcer Alan Parkin. The Deputy Fire Chief oversees crews in the hall under direction from the Fire Chief. Strathmore Rural Fire Department currently has 20 members, and Carseland Fire Department 13 members. From January to March of this year, the call statistics show the two halls do about 47 per cent of the calls in the county, with the other re services splitting the remaining 53 per cent. At a Wheatland County council meeting Parkin advised council that administration was reviewing some of the options for the long-term operation of the Strathmore Rural and Carseland Fire Fighting Response Areas, and a full report with options will be coming to council sometime in May.

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Meadowlark Seniors Care Homes invited the community into their home on April 4 so people could nd out more about the home. Debbie Wakelam, owner/operator of the home, was happy to see MLA Jason Hale in attendance so that she could bend his ear a little about what she offers, and some concerns about the industry. One of the biggest reasons Wakelam had guests to the home was so they could see the family atmosphere that her residents have. During the time Hale was there one resident became a little upset, and instead of the staff rushing to her side they were in the same room, close by - a fellow resident helped calm the woman down. I was very impressed with the facility. It was really interesting talking with the seniors that live there and they love it, it is like a fam

ily, its a family atmosphere, they help each other, they console each other, they are great friends and it is a really, really neat opportunity for seniors to live in that type of environment if they so chose, said Hale. Wakelam showed Hale the 32 standards that all care facilities have to follow, and then brought up the Supportive Living guidelines and regulations that the government had created. All supportive living accommodations must be licensed when we provide permanent accommodation for four or more adults, said Wakelam. I dont agree with that. Wakelam said seniors are a vulnerable group and she thinks if you charge any senior, that isnt a parent or family member, then you should have to be licensed. Otherwise you could y under the radar, take in only three seniors, feed them mac and cheese every day and

never be questioned. As a supportive living facility, you have to comply with the licensing regulations, and there are annual site inspections for seniors lodges, group homes and supportive living accommodations. Supportive living means the accommodation - the seniors room - the meals and housekeeping are covered in the rates charged. If youre a private supportive living operator then the cost for additional services like getting people dressed, bathing people, all those extra services, we charge for, said Wakelam. If you go into publicly funded health, or personal care homes, which can get contracts in the city, then that is paid for by the government. When a facility is contracted with the government, then the government sets the price for accommodation. Because she is private she can charge more, or less. One of Wakelams biggest questions is about the contract that was given to Sagewood by the government, but she was told because she is rural she cant get it. The main difference between the two is size of their buildings; otherwise they offer supportive living

care under the same Alberta Health guidelines. The main reason I would want the funding is because then I could provide services to low income people, said Wakelam. Being privately run means that her residents have to be able to afford the care. If she was contracted, she could open another home, and the government would set the rate for the residents and then would fund the rest. When she asked about the contract she was told by the government that they are not contracting care homes. Wakelam would like to see some sort of funding program in place that can help her when purchasing a new home or adding to a home. Homecare will come in and assess a senior, and say if they need support, but after assessment homecare doesnt recognize a private living facility as a place for the senior to move on to which is something she doesnt think is right. If she was contracted, they would have no choice but to list her as an option. Hale said he will be looking into why Wakelam is not able to get the same funding as other supportive living facilities in the area.

EYES empowers young women

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter The Empowering Young women to Explore their Strength and condence (EYES) program at the Youth Club of Strathmore has taken off since its inception last year. The program started as collaboration with Children and Family Services, Golden Hills School Division, FCSS and the Youth Club. In 2013 there was an identied group of girls that the different organizations thought would benet from such a program, and so it was put together and has had positive results. The goal is to promote positive selfesteem and condence in the young women within the community. Each program is an hour and a half, once a week for a total of 12 weeks. The girls cover a number of topics including stress, anxiety, positive relationships, teen health issues, drug and alcohol use, domestic violence, high risk behaviours and promoting positive self-esteem. This year the girls had to do a community service project, and together with Youth Club coordinators, they decided to host a bottle drive. They managed to raise approximately $220, and with the money they bought girly stuff, makeup, scarves, perfume and nail polish to put into baskets to donate to the

Community Crisis Society. They chose the womens shelter to help teens like themselves when they come into the shelter, said Program Facilitator Hannah Magee. Each basket also contains a quote that means something to each girl and is meant to be an inspiration to the recipient of the basket. Last year the program started with one group of eight girls, and this year there are three groups. I think it is going really well. Success is measured in different ways, the fact that the girls come every week and sometimes they come even when they dont go to school to me shows that

theres a connection here, said Shannon Zieman, program coordinator for the Youth Club. We just try to provide them with good information so they can make good choices and a big piece of what we do is helping them come up with safety plans and just information on how to keep themselves safe in our community, and then expanding a little bit more into the self-esteem and were going to do some work with employ$36.00+ tax ability and that sort of stuff. The EYES program consists of students coming from Crowther Memorial Junior High, Strathmore High School and Storefront school.

Farmers with permits exempt from spring road bans

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter As of April 1 farmers transporting grain from storage to elevators will be exempt from vehicle weight restrictions on provincial highways. The farmers will be able to obtain permits to haul grain when highway road bans are in effect, and the permits will be available at no cost, allowing 100 per cent axle weight on banned roads, as long as the roads are not damaged in the process. Were doing all we can to support Alberta famers and keep grain moving, even on banned roads when possible, said Minister of Transportation Wayne Drysdale in a press release. Relaxing road ban limits at a time when our farmers need some exibility is the right thing to do. Spring thaw can be rough on Alberta roads, especially oiled roads and those waiting for nal paving to be completed. Because of this, road bans are sometimes necessary to protect the infrastructure at its weakest. The bans generally begin in southern Alberta and make their way north as temperatures rise. The bans are lifted once Alberta Transportation staff is able to determine the roads will be able to handle regular vehicle weight. Agriculture is Albertas largest renewable industry and part of the foundation of our rural economy. I am very pleased producers, municipalities and our government are working together with other links in the supply chain to ensure that grain will keep moving to market this spring, said Verlyn Olsen, minister of agriculture and rural development in the same release. The special permits are in effect from April 1 until June 30. During that time Alberta Transportation staff will be monitoring road conditions and suggesting alternate routes if necessary to keep motorists safe and to protect high infrastructure. Albertas agricultural exports are valued at more than $9 billion annually. In 2013 the western Canadian harvest produced an estimated 75.9 million metric tonnes of major grain crops, nearly 40 per cent more than the ve-year average. HOW TO APPLY FOR A ROAD BAN EXEMPTION Get a permit request form by contacting Alberta Transportations Central Permit Ofce toll free at 1-800-662-7138 from 6 a.m. to midnight on weekdays, and 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends and statutory holidays. Complete the form by providing information on the trips origin, destination, route, trucks covered, weights requested, number of loads required and contact information. Get the road ban exemption if the route can withstand your proposed trafc without signicant damage according to engineers and regional maintenance staff. Contact the local municipality directly for a permit to haul grain on municipal roads.

Capsule Comments
Acetaminophen is the most commonly used pain reliever in the world. But just because its popular doesnt mean it cant cause any problems. Dont exceed the dose recommended on the label. Liver damage can occur with taking too much of the drug for a long period of time. Do you remember your mother giving you oatmeal for breakfast because it would stick to your ribs and keep you full till lunch? Well, there is some truth to that. If you are always ravenous come lunchtime, try a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. It will keep hunger away better than dry cereals. Pertussis is a disease that is preventable through vaccination. It is a serious illness in infants where it can be life-threatening. Pertussis is also called whooping cough because of the whooping sound that is made when gasping for air after a fit of coughing. Manufacturers of tablet medication put a score line on the tablet if it is OK to cut the tablet in half. If there is no score line, it may not be good to cut it in half. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist. There is a good reason why some tablets should not be broken and breaking it could affect how it works in the body. Whether you are wondering about a new drug that is coming on the market or an old one thats been around a while, you can depend on our pharmacists for reliable information.

Festival of fun

Medical Marijuana facilities set for West Hwy #1 Industrial Park

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor There was a strange blend of decision making going on in Wheatland Council on April 8, after the public meeting closed and councillors discussed the land-use bylaw pertaining to medical marijuana facility applications within Wheatland County. First reading on the bylaw was passed on March 11. There were no objections submitted against the bylaw at the public hearing. Some council members were against the use of marijuana, but voted for the requirements laid out by the federal government and the land-use bylaw, while others supported medical marijuana production, but voted against limiting them to the Hwy #1 Industrial Park. The land-use bylaw determined the growth and production of medical marijuana would not fall under agriculture, nursery, or greenhouse designations in Wheatland County, but would be considered under a designation of its own and adhere to the federal government requirements and standards. If you think it is an agricultural product, you are kidding yourself, said Councillor Ben Armstrong. It is a drug that is out there destroying our population. If it has to be here, then it is better to have more restrictions than less. The production facilities would be required to locate within the West Hwy #1 Industrial Park and submit environmental, water and waste water plans, trafc impact studies, and waste management and storm water management reports with application, similar to any commercial or industrial application. The lots would be required to be placed among the industrial general areas of the industrial park. The bylaw would require a review of the business permit every three to ve years, which staff said would allow a re-examination of the business for any problems that occurred in that time frame. Danny Thiessen spoke up in the public hearing and said anyone investing in the business would not gamble millions of dollars on a bet that their permit would be renewed in three years. He said it was a smart move to locate the facility in the industrial area for safety reasons, but questioned if other businesses in the industrial park would be notied, and wondered if any safety provisions would be made for adjacent businesses. I have a problem with it being restricted to one place. The more restrictive we are, the more challenges we will see and it will cost the county money. If we put up enough roadblocks, no-one will apply, said Alice Booth. If Bauer came in and wanted to set up pharmaceutical production, would we do this for them as well? I think we are being too restrictive. We arent putting up roadblocks, said Chief Administrative Ofcer Alan Parkin. This is based on sound planning. There is good highway access and we have consulted with the RCMP and other municipalities in this matter. He said if something was put in place, there are controls and parameters that council could work under. There have been three interested parties approach the county and Parkin said he would like to give them an answer, but couldnt proceed unless something was put in place. There are several challenges to the new medical marijuana laws in other provinces that might overturn the requirement of users to buy from legal production facilities, rather than growing it for themselves. There was debate whether this would impact the number of production facilities looking for locations and change the governments approach to the product. There is a public push from some sectors to legalize all marijuana use. We cant predict the future with these facilities, said Kim Sandbeck, Development Ofcer. It may become legal and may be a store front with lots of trafc, who knows what will happen. Council voted ve to two to accept the second and third reading of the bylaw, with Alice Booth and Brenda Knight registering their votes opposed to the bylaw, but not the production of medical marijuana.

Sorenson remembers friend

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Contributor The news of former nance minister Jim Flahertys sudden passing came as a great shock to many across the nation on April 10. Flaherty had just retired from the government a few short weeks earlier, stating that he was on the road to full recovery and that his health was not related to his departure from politics. Crowfoots Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson had worked closely with Flaherty over the past year, since taking on the position of Minister of State for nance. The last big project the two men had recently worked hard on was the provincial budget that was released in February. News of Jim Flahertys passing came to me like it came to most of you - as a great shock. A shock because I saw him at his nest. A master of his les and the best Finance Minister this country has ever seen. I had the great fortune, even for a short time, to watch him guide the nancial affairs of Canada. I will always cherish that, said Sorenson. When we see, up close, someone who has done so much for our country we are loathe to see any faults. Jim Flaherty was such a man. He was tenacious, effective, kind, and tough. He cared about every day Canadians and he wasnt shy to speak his mind or afraid to make personal sacrice when he thought his countrys interests were at stake. I will always remember the kindness he showed me as a friend and new Minister. He was patient but moreover, and this is something that anyone who met with him will tell you, Jim Flaherty was a champion listener. That is one of the qualities that made him such a good Minister and person. My thoughts and prayers go out to Christine and their children, John, Galen and Quinn. Jim Flaherty was a good man. A state funeral was held on Wednesday, April 16 at the St. James Cathedral in downtown Toronto. His family said in an earlier statement to the press that Flaherty passed peacefully in his home. Speculation is that he had a heart attack.

Direct Energy Regulated Services

To the Editor What a hypocritical statement, Direct Energy Regulated Services! A regulator delivers consistency. Please tell us what the blazes do you regulate? It is sure as heck has re, but its not our gas prices. How can an average bluecollar worker do a budget when gas prices can uctuate more than 100 per cent at the stroke of midnight? How does one put any faith into the corporation that keeps us from freezing our butts off, in this land we call home? How do we keep these corporations from putting the screws to us when we need them the most? Oh, lets not forget about supply and demand. I honestly wouldnt mind paying extra in those cold months, but from one cold month to another you go from a $100 bill to over $225 it does not require a genius to know, Houston, we have a problem! Looking for help nding a relative

To the Editor I wonder if the readers of the Strathmore Times could possibly help me to trace a relative of my late grandmother, Leah Yates. I live in England and I am looking for a Mrs. Beverly Ann McConnell. Her grandfather was my grandmothers brother and was named George Higham Goodwin and his son George William Goodwin was Beverlys father. He died in 1990 and was buried in Queens Park Cemetery in Calgary. I have found from the obituary that Beverly and her husband Bill lived in Strathmore and I wondered if you could possibly publish this in the hope that they still live there and that someone who sees this might know them. This is my last hope of completing the missing link and I would really love to be able to get in touch as I met Beverly briey when she visited England many years ago. To the Editor After my recent spring visits to the recycle yard, I felt compelled to write a letter outlining my concerns. When my family moved to Strathmore over ve years ago, we were pleasantly surprised upon our rst visit to the recycle yard. What we found was a well-kept facility, with helpful staff, that supported several community and social functions. First, it was a recycle facility; this was a nice change for us and allowed us to take part in resource conservation by re-allocating much of our household waste. We purchased individual bins and started separating all the items that were suitable for recycling. As a family, our curbside waste went from two full bins a week to less than one! We began composting and that also contributed to the net-loss going to the landll. After my visits to the old recycle facility, I discovered a few unintentional benets from this site. First, it was a great opportunity to bring my kids and have them take part in the recycling process. By doing this, we are ensuring that the next generation has a greater chance of growing-up with a much more eco-friendly attitude than previous generations. I cant imagine being able to attach a cost savings to this type of awareness, all I can say is it is huge. This was kind of a fun family thing to do for an hour on the weekends; we might include a walk down Eagle Lake trail while we were there. Secondly, the recycle yard gained a type of niche, pseudo-celebrity status amongst users. Many people had fun stories of their individual experiences while at the recycle yard, especially the take it or leave it. Anyone who has studied the ideals that help build a strong community knows that taking advantage of opportunities for spontaneous gatherings is an essential part of building community wellness. Well, I can say that for me all the benets of the facility have vanished as a result of the sale to a private business. Visiting the site has become an undesirable

Thought for the Week ~

Every new day brings new hope.

experience for me; I would never take my kids there now. Some of my observations range from the obvious drop in customer service, to the fact that the land now looks like a garbage dump instead of a recycle facility. I observed hazards from used oil spilling on the ground, paint cans being stored in the rain, to hydraulic oil being spilled on the ground. The arrangement of the yard is no longer user friendly, it feels more like get in and get out! During a recent visit, I observed melt water carrying oil and paint onto the land directly east of the site. I believe the town owns that land, who will be responsible for cleaning-up the land if it will ever be sold? Much of that water eventually drains towards Eagle Lake; I dont think it needs any more pollutants. I have been told by the town that the property has been sold and there is no reversing what has happened. This is why I felt it was important to write the letter, it is necessary for residents to question our council on decisions they make. This one had obvious short-term cost savings but I wonder what the long-term cost (nancial and social) will be? Would it be asking too much to perhaps see the recycle yard returned to a state of cleanliness? Doug Clarke, Strathmore

Canadas rst Victims Bill of Rights

KEVIN SORENsON, M.P., CROWfOOT Parliamentary Report Last week, our Government took a very important step of further recognizing the rights of victims. Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced legislation to create a Canadian Victims Bill of Rights. This proposed legislation is historic. For the rst time in Canadian history, victims will have clear, statutory rights at the federal level. Unlike the previous Liberal government, who for 13 years put the rights of offenders ahead of the rights of victims, we are acting to put law-abiding Canadians rst. As your Member of Parliament, I have met with victims of crime from our Crowfoot riding many times. Whether the crime committed was petty or an indictable offence, the tragedy of the suffering of the victim, family or friends has always left a deep impression on me. As our federal representative, I have always tried to return to Parliament and follow-up on measures that our government could take to prevent or help relieve the distress felt by victims of crime. Earlier in my career, I brought forward Private Member Bills aimed at instilling truth in sentencing. Later, as Chair of the House of Commons Public Safety and National Security Committee, I presided over the passage of a number of laws that placed the rights of the victims rst, and strengthened the response of Canadas criminal justice systems to victims of crime. For example, our Conservative government created the Ofce of the Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime; provided the Federal Victims Strategy; and doubled the victims surcharge which we also made mandatory; and more. Justice Minister Peter MacKay has travelled to every province and territory conducting extensive consultations on the Victims Bill of Rights. We have tried to ensure that, for example, property concerns are given greater prominence; information is provided concerning court dates or plea negotiations; and that victims feel properly protected throughout the criminal justice process and beyond, to include information concerning incarceration and release. Our Conservative government is pressing forward because we have heard loud and clear from Canadians that they need to feel that their justice system is working for them. A study released in 2011 by the Department of Justice Canada found that the total cost of crime is an estimated $99.6 billion a year, 83 per cent of these costs are damages suffered by the victims. This is one reason why we make no apologies for passing reforms to keep societys most dangerous criminals off our streets and behind bars where they belong. Senseless vandalism at Sacred Heart Academy

Late Monday night (April 14) or early Tuesday morning, some of Sacred Heart Elementary schools windows were smashed in with metal rods and doors and walls were tagged with yellow graffiti. Staff and students returning to school on Tuesday morning found the glass inside the classroom and then further found the graffiti on the outside of the building. Some classes had to be moved to another location in the school as they waited for RCMP to come and investigate the situation.

Stunning display by local photographer

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter The Strathmore Municipal Library loves hosting art and photography exhibits, and so when local photographer Joe Bratton approached the staff about displaying his work, they enthusiastically said yes. Brattons display has been set up in the library since April 1, and will remain there until April 25. Joes work is stunning. I had never seen art printed on metal before and vibrancy of the pieces make them a joy to look at, said Assistant Director of Library Services Carmen Erison. In addition to the display, Bratton is also holding a contest where people are asked to guess what his Outer Space photo is of and how he shot it. Anyone who guesses correctly will have their name entered into a draw for the print. It was actually Joes idea to host a contest. This being a rst for us, we were thrilled that an artist would provide such an opportunity for our patrons, said Erison. Bratton rst began learning photography while he was in Britain. I was actually taught photography when I was in the British Army way back in the day, I was doing jobs in the army which entailed taking pictures, so I was actually trained by them and I just continued on with it when I left the military in 1996, said Bratton. When he left the army, photography became more of a hobby and he would play around with different types of photography. To this day he still shoots a wide range of subjects, using different lenses and landscapes to create his masterpieces. I really like doing these old farms, equipment and stuff like that, said Bratton. He found a derelict farm just north and east of town and thats where he shot a number of the photos on display at the library. For this exhibit most of his prints have been done on metal, with a few on traditional canvas. I was looking at different things to print on and I came across metal prints. I couldnt nd anyone in Calgary to do it so I actually found a company in Toronto and they ship it over here, said Bratton. The one thing with printing on metal is that it cant print whites, and so any parts that would be white are actually just the metal itself showing through. Brattons favourite photo on display is a black and white shot he took of an old gas station in Gleichen. His summer job with Alberta One-Call Corporation the call-before-you-dig company - allows him to travel the county and nd new photo subjects. Brattons display, and contest, at the library ends on April 25. To see some of Brattons photography, or to order prints, go to www.thistlephoto.ca.

Local photographer Joe Bratton has canvas and metal prints of some of his work on display at the Strathmore Municipal Library until April 25. Joe Bratton in Scotland.

REMEMBErING OUr rOOTS -Albert & Vi Giesbrecht

JOHN GODSMAN Times Contributor Alberts family originated in Holland, and emigrated to Southern Manitoba in 1865, where there were already over 5,000 Mennonites. Albert was born in 1943, in a log cabin near Lavenham, Man., the 11th and last child of his Mennonite family. He went to school in Austin, Man. through Grade 8, when he left to join a construction company. Vis ancestors go back to at least the early 1300s, and were Germans from the Baden-Wuttemberg region of Germany. In 1783, they immigrated to Galicia, an area created by Poland, which was under Austrian rule. Starting in the late 1800s, several branches of the family emigrated to Canada, settling in the Plumas area of Manitoba. Being farmers they took advantage of the free land being offered by the Canadian Government and the CPR. When Vi was born in 1943, the fth of six children, her christened name was Viola Volker, but it was soon shortened to Vi and her surname was changed from Volker to Walker. She started school in a oneroom country school, before attending Plumas High School through Grade 11. After graduating she worked at Eatons Department Store in Winnipeg. Albert and Vi met through mutual friends, and were married in May 1963 in a Lutheran Church in Plumas. They have two sons, and a grand- daughter, who lives in Santa Barbara, California. They moved to Calgary in 1965, where Albert continued to work in construction, before forming his own company, Albert Giesbrecht Construction, in 1994. His company built commercial buildings, farm buildings and some residential homes. Vi worked as a secretary at different ofces after they moved to Calgary. In 1979, they moved to the Ardenode area, north of Strathmore, then moved into Strathmore in 1979, moving into one of the rst houses to be built in the Thorncliffe area, where they still live. Vi spent 17 years working for Canada Post. When I asked why they moved to Strathmore, they replied mainly because other family members lived here. They have spent many years assisting in community activities, especially since moving to Strathmore. Albert served as President of the Ag Society for 12 years, was involved in the building of the Lutheran Church, and he and Vi still assist in putting together the Celebration of Lights at the Ag Grounds. Vi has spent 12 years working with Christmas Hamper in charge of toys, has served with the Chamber of Commerce, and the Library Board. When I asked what changes they had seen since 1979, they advised the population then was around 2,000. The Seed Cleaning Plant was the furthest north structure, with nothing but farmland beyond. George Freeman Trail didnt exist, there were no bridges over the canal, and no Centre Street. Getting to their house was quite an experience.

Vimy Ridge
The Strathmore Royal Canadian Legion held their annual appreciation dinner and ceremony in memory of the battle at Vimy Ridge on Saturday, April 12. The famous battle took place in April of 1917. It is an important event to members, and one where they can show their appreciation for the freedom we enjoy today.

Ag program looking for volunteers

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter The Classroom Agriculture Program (CAP), which teaches Grade 4 students across the province about their food from soil to plate, is looking for volunteers from now until June. This year in Calgary we had a record number of schools register for the CAP program, said Karen Spelay, CAP General Manager in a press release. Over 260 classes are registered to receive the program in Calgary alone. Volunteer support is urgently needed to help fulll this large demand. Without volunteers we cannot deliver the program to students. If you are employed in the agriculture industry in any way please get involved, your help is necessary. Many children in todays classrooms are convinced that milk, eggs and vegetables come from the grocery store. They dont often realize that these products come from the cows, chickens and crops in Alberta, and they dont know the roles that agriculture plays in their lives. CAP is hoping to help change that by getting farmers, and those in the agriculture community, into the classroom helping children learn more about the food they eat and where it comes from. Dedicated CAP volunteers will deliver the hour-long presentation to over 20,000 Alberta students annually. Presentations include story-telling, handson props and fun activities. CAP will provide the training, ideas, resources and guidance to all of their volunteers. To register as a CAP volunteer, or for more information, go to www.classroomagriculture.com.

Restless over spring ooding

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor While county crews were levelling a snow drift in Carseland that threatened to ood alleyways and local garages, ofcials were considering bigger worries with melting snow creating havoc on local roadways. On April 10, Wheatland County posted a precautionary high water level alert as there are elevated water levels in streams, rivers, and other bodies of water that may create dangerous situations, or lead to ooding. The following roads were or are currently closed due to the wet conditions: Township road 252 between range road 262 and 263. Township road 252 between range road 255 and 261 Range road 243A Namaka road south west exit. Range road 243 between township road 274 and 280. Township road 272 between range road 231 and 225 Range road 234 between township road 232 and 230 including township road 230 between range road 233and 234. The county is advising motorists to avoid areas surrounding rivers, valleys and low-lying areas. In view of last years ooding, ofcials are watching the water tables and forecasts to try and predict areas that will experience extreme change due to melting conditions. Flooded roadways are nothing new for locals who have lived here for a number of years. Seasoned farmers can tell you which roads in their area typically ood and when they will probably be good enough to use. If there isnt a local prognosticator close, a quick boo at the website is not a bad idea. Posting advisories are part of the provinces pledge to keep the public better informed about ooding dangers. The county is on board with

this, as it is always looking for ways to keep residents safe from potential risks within county borders. The provincial warning system calculates spring runoff based on three main factors: moisture conditions in the fall, snow accumulation in the winter and the rate of melt and actual precipitation during runoff season itself. Experts say by combining models of water ow, geological characteristics and meteorological trends, more accurate predictions of how and where water is going to go can be predicted. Along with improved ood hazard maps, a better awareness can be determined of high-risk areas and dangers arising from oods. The Alberta government has been working on modelling projects, which will be completed in May. However, it is clear there are already signs showing water levels are high, and they are making people hit by last years ooding a little restless, in spite of ood mediation projects that were implemented to correct last years weak points. According to David Sauchyn, a researcher with the Prairie Adaption Research Collaborative, there will be many wet years ahead for Alberta. He is not alone in his predictions. The recent United Nations review of climate change reports states the CO2 levels are setting the stage for oods, droughts and less crop yields in many countries of the world. With last years ooding fresh in peoples minds, ofcials encouraged individuals to develop emergency plans that would aid them in emergency situations. An annual RBC study on water attitudes says 74 per cent of those surveyed agreed climate change will cause extreme weather to occur more frequently, but the RBC study also showed only nine per cent of those polled had taken precautions to protect themselves and their homes from high water. One in ve respondents said they live in an area vulnerable to ooding. So it might be a good reminder, if you havent taken those gumboots out of storage, it may be a good time to consider it. Best case scenario is to use them to play in the puddles with the kids. Worst case scenario is they can be part of a household emergency kit that should be put together sooner rather than later. Staff at the Wheatland County ofce, Town of Strathmore, or the FCSS ofces can help with information on what should be included and what measures can be taken to protect families in emergencies. The County website will continue to monitor weather, along with other emergencies local residents should be aware of to ensure residents remain as safe as possible. www.wheatlandcounty.ca.

MDP amendment brings divided vote

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor On April 8, Wheatland council got a slight reprieve from headaches caused by butting their heads against the new MDP servicing policy requirement of having piped services paid by the developer, for the sixth or more subdivisions in one quarter section lands designated Country Residential or Ag small holding. The new amendment specied municipal servicing would only be a requirement for residential developments outside urban areas. Ever since this began, I have struggled with this. We should have a further look at this, said Councillor Alice Booth. At the public hearing, Pat Maloney for Trilogy Homes stood and asked council about billing for costs under the amendment that would now not be necessary. She also wondered if consideration could be given under the amendment to including the use of wells and septic systems, where reports show it is a viable option for new phases of home developments. The practise of using wells and septic elds was one of the things planners wanted to move away from because of contamination risks, and move towards better use of shared resources and preserving water quality and quantities in larger development plans. The amendment changed Policy 3.11.2 (2) so residential subdivisions of six lots or more outside urban areas would be required to, at developers cost, have piped services that tie into existing county water and sewer service lines, or be made able to tie into them when services become available. No discussion indicated whether or not the county would be moving towards municipal servicing within all the hamlets and villages in the future. Those residential subdivisions or re-designations applied for prior to Oct. 15, 2013 may not be required to comply with municipal servicing. Those applications were being grandfathered over as they were in the works when the new MDP was put into effect. There are 16 lots affected and once the amendments are passed the owners can come forward for consideration on their plans. The council voted on second and third readings for the amendments leading to a split vote, showing they were still divided on the servicing issue, but both amendments were approved by majority rule.

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER Times Contributor When prospective students consider attending Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA), theyre encouraged to attend Scout Week. Scouts attend classes, watch rehearsals and performances, participate in a talent assessment, and serve dinner to theatregoers. Scouts stay with RSA students and eat meals with Rosebud residents, and their week concludes with an interview with RSA faculty. March 24 to 29, we followed two Scouts through Scout Week, and they told us what the week meant to them. Sarah Siggelkow is a Calgary Grade 12 student whos currently performing in Godspell. The arts have totally been my passion since I was a kid, she said. Her interest in Rosebud was shaped by a drama teacher who often talked about Rosebud, and by her grandmother, who just loves (Rosebud). Emily Salkeld is a Calgary Grade 11 student who loves theatre. She sings, and plays piano and guitar. Her decision to attend Scout Week was inuenced by her parents love for Rosebud, and by a family friend, Mark Lewandowski, whos also Centre of the Arts General Manager. On their rst evening of Scout Week, after orientation, a village tour, and meeting their hosts, Sarah and Emily talked with us. Sarah had fallen in love with this small community and the idea of working closely with other people who have similar passions as I do. She hoped Scout Week would show her whether RSAs programs would be a good t for her. By the end of the week, she hoped to say, this is the path I want to take. Emily said Rosebud seemed like such a good place and such a homey place where people are so willing to help each other out ... I wouldnt want to study theatre anywhere else. She was excited about the week and about her future. Im feeling like (RSA) is a good t for me, just because of all the unique things that Rosebud offers, she said. During their rst three days, Sarah and Emily attended eight classes, two choir practices, two play rehearsals, and a chapel. They ate meals in six different homes, and performed their talent assessments. Sarah e-mailed that she found the talent assessment afrming. She was working hard and having fun. I loved seeing the costume trailer! she wrote. I also loved experiencing the musical aspect of Rosebud. She was so impressed by the friendliness and overall sincerity of Rosebuds people that it inuenced her decisionmaking. I immediately connected to Rosebud, she said. I felt welcomed and appreciated. I am inspired and I hope to attend Rosebud School of the Arts, whether right after high school or not

right away. Scout Week has been hugely helpful. It has given me an excellent understanding of what Rosebud is and what it offers. Before Emilys talent assessment, she emailed, Ive got a weird mix of excitement and nervousness. Afterward, she wrote, that required me to put myself out there a little more than I am comfortable with, but she welcomed the challenge. Scout Week is helping me grow as an actor ... Im learning a lot of technique things and Im really excited to go home and use them! Its encouraging to have so many talented people hear what I have to say and encourage me in where I am in my walk as an actress right now, Emily wrote. She also liked getting an inside look at the classes. It was denitely worth giving up my spring break to come here, Emily said. Whether or not I choose to attend RSA its been a great learning experience and an amazing opportunity to grow. On their last morning, we caught up with them again. Sarah was tired. For such a small town, theres denitely not a shortage of things to do, she said. Shed loved serving in the dinner theatre, and watching The Diary of Anne Frank. People (in Rosebud) look at you in the eyes when they talk. They care about you, Sarah said. Their acceptance taught her a lesson. I learned that everywhere I go, I have something to offer, she said. When I come into a new place, I need to know who I am, and not wait for the people there to tell me that I have something to offer. I love how Rosebud sees education and the arts as more than just something to learn or a schooling system or anything like that. Its not a school. Its a community of people learning their passion. Scout Week has been awesome for me. Its just cleared up a lot of questions I have. The challenges have been to gure out how I would t (into RSA) ... its a hard decision. Emily also learned a lot. I thought I had kind of known it all before, which is typical, of course, for a teenager ... I realized that theres so much that I dont know. Classes were fun. Shed loved The Diary of Anne Frank, visiting the costume trailers and serving dinner. But meeting people was still her favourite. The community is so nice, and genuine in their niceness, and caring, and so willing to help each other out, she said. Deciding whether to attend RSA is a huge challenge, Emily said. I really want to come here, but I dont know if God wants me to come here or not. RSAs next Scout Week is scheduled for May 2014. Rosebuds new chef brings commitment, experience to role

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER Times Contributor Charlie See, Rosebud Centre of the Arts new executive chef, brings decades of experience and a high standard of commitment to his role. See apprenticed and worked under European chefs for 10 years at the prestigious Sherwood Inn in Muskoka, Ontario, learning French cuisine. At the same time, he cooked roadside diner food at The Woodsman Inn. When he took time to recover from a back injury, he thought hard about his life. Though hed already earned his Red Seal, he wasnt as good a cook as he wanted to be. He re-entered the kitchen with a new commitment to become the best cook he could possibly be. Continuing part-time at the Sherwood, See rose through the ranks at the highly-regarded Talisman Mountain Inn, being honoured as the best pastry chef theyd ever had. But See wanted to work a longer ski season, and to add high-volume cooking to his resume. He decided to move to western Canada. After a year at the Panorama Ski Hill as executive sous chef, See was sous chef at the Num-Ti-Jah Lodge for four years, then pastry chef with exclusive Canadian Mountain Holidays for two more. When Num-Ti-Jah Lodge offered him the executive chef position, he was quick to accept. During his four years there, Sees daughter was born, and his priorities shifted again. I had to start thinking about making more money and not just working for the experience, he says. I decided to move to Calgary and open my own business. Since 2004, hes operated one to three catering businesses at any one time. The money was good, he says, but it wasnt uncommon for me to work 24-30 hour days, he says. After 10 years of catering, I decided I wanted to do something else. So he responded to the advertisement for a chef at Rosebud. When he rst visited the village, I was taken with the place right away, said See, who started March 1. I said I want to be here ... it looks like a great new challenge. The Rosebud people, both locals and customers, are the highlight of his new role. Im working with a great team of cooks and apprentices and dishwashers, and local people that are general helpers. Everybodys awesome. He served his rst theatre buffet Friday, March 28. (People are) really expecting a show when they come here, he says, so were going to try and give them a good show on the food end that pairs up well with the show they get in the theatre. Hes excited about preparing more food from scratch, using more local products, and possibly introducing game like pheasant and bison. Wild Horse Jacks Restaurant is also undergoing a transformation. In future, he envisions a possiwww.videogallery ble farmers market, and making more productsstrathmore.formovies.com to sell, including canned goods, and smoked salmon and trout. See commutes from Calgary, which is a challenge this winter. He also faces the challenge of bringing varied foods to Rosebud. But, on the whole, the transition has gone smoothly, and all the challenges, he says, are over-come-able. Angela Killoran, rst cook in the Rosebud kitchen, appreciates the opportunity to work with Charlie. Hes encouraging and stimulating, she says. Hes got a really good heart. I believe God totally brought him here.

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Each year Westmount Elementary Schools Grade 5 and 6 students put on a masterpiece as part of the drama program. This years play, called Paula and the Pirates, was once again written by Associate Principal Dana Graff, and was directed by teacher Aric Wutzke. The play follows the story of Paula, who is injured in a bike accident. She is feeling pretty sad about her prospects and feels she cant do anything now that she has a crippled leg. Paulas fairy godmother hears her complaints and sends her to a magical island lled with pirates, monkeys and owls to nd her treasure, and her way. which is extracurricular, keeps growing. This year there were approximately 50 students as part of the cast and crew. Its great to see the fact that were getting so many more kids. Plus it seems we are getting a few more boys too which is good, said Graff. The idea for Paula and the Pirates came from last years drama group. At the end of the year the cast and crew got together for lunch and thought up the general idea for the script. They are an amazing group of kids that have really put a lot of effort into it and are really excited about it and that energy is spilling on to the Grade 4s who are really looking forward to next year, said Wutzke. Dana is an amazing man and so talented artistically, I think since hes been here he has either written or modied the scripts. Those are big shoes to ll. Im loving it. For me it is working with the kids and working with them that is beyond academics. For a lot of these kids this is what theyre going to remember for years to come.

Local business forced to pay

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter A Strathmore business was taken to civil court on April 11 to ght a dispute over a jewelry repair. The plaintiff Edith Mockford gave the defendant Minh Ho, owner of Masterpieces Fine Jewelry, a ring in May of 2013. The item was a custom-made eternal open weave Celtic knot, also known as a trinity knot. The ring was to be Mockfords wedding band. Traditionally the band is worn as an engagement ring and then, as the wedding nears, two diamond rails are mounted to represent the wedding ring during the exchange ceremony. Mockford had approached Ho to have him mount the two rails to the original band in preparation for her upcoming wedding in July of 2013. When Mockford went to pick up her ring on June 17, 2013 she was shocked at the work that had been done. He had melted through several of the trinity knots into a non shape. You could see a visible hole where he melted through the knots. He did not correctly mount one of the diamond rails leaving an acutely visible gap between the ring and rail. The dark-coloured metal material he used between the ring and rails was not even white or yellow gold to match the ring or rails, said Mockford. He did offer to try to x the wedding band, and I advised him it was custommade and without the mold he wouldnt be able to x it. She needed the repairs to happen quickly so that she would be able to have her ring in time for her wedding that was only a few short weeks away. Mockford sent the ring off to a master jeweler who melted down the existing gold and remade the ring. Mockford then went to Ho requesting that he pay the costs of the repairs, which was $787.50. Ho refused to pay the full amount, offering instead to pay $300 for his admitted mistake. The ensuing arguments between the two lead to the case being presented before Judge McIlhargey on April 11. McIlhargey stated that Mockford should have given Ho a chance to x it, but given the special circumstances it was understandable why she didnt. If Mr. Ho is prepared to settle, then he should be given credit for it, said McIlhargey. I want to settle this as soon as possible, said Ho to the judge. Even though the judge did feel Ho would lose if the case went to trial, he did state that a bad settlement is way better than a good loss, because once it is settled you could move on. Both parties agreed that they were comfortable with McIlhargey passing judgment and listing an amount he thought fair. McIlhargey made a motion against Ho, ordering him to pay Mockford $600. He also ordered that Ho pay Mockford before court would be closed on the matter. While it was not the full amount Mockford was requesting, she was happy to see Ho held responsible. I believe the judge sent a clear message that such shoddy workmanship is not tolerated as Minh Ho was held accountable and responsible for his actions. The Civil Court judge brought that message forward by directing, and granting me nancial restitution, said Mockford. It was a victory for the small guy, or little person, when it comes to consumer protection and consumer rights. I am glad the judge was able to determine their culpability in this situation.

week is the last three days with the services of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Vigil. Maundy is a corruption of the Latin word mandatum which means commandment and refers to Jesus commandment to his disciples at their last supper to love one another as he has loved them. Good Friday is a somber day that recalls Jesus death on the cross and his burial in the tomb. Easter Vigil is festivals equivalent of Christmas Eve a service of expectation looking forward to the celebration of the resurrection. While many think of Easter as just one day, it in fact is an entire season within the Church that begins on Easter Sunday and continues for 50 days. It concludes with the feast of Pentecost, which celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit and establishment of the followers of Jesus as the Church. The tradition of Easter eggs is a product of the Lenten fast (eggs were one of the restricted foods). By the time Easter came there were more than 40 days of eggs sitting around, and so they were decorated and eaten. The egg also is an image of the tomb. It looks like a stone, but inside there is the golden yolk resembling the sun.

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter
The Strathmore High School girls were defeated on the rugby pitch by Bev Fancy High School on April 12 by a score of 25-10, but came back strong in their second match, shutting out Old Scona High School 10-0 later that day.

Spartans down two

Strathmore High School (SHS) had their rst look at other league teams on April 12, for a three-team rugby tournament at Rundle College. However, due to poor weather, it was difcult to properly evaluate the teams abilities. Both sides play well, but it was very cold, said SHS coach Brad Steele of his boys rst game 0-0 tie against Rundle. It was a good game, but handling the ball was a little difcult. The snow on the eld during the match eventually turned to ice; conditions improved slightly for the second game against Highwood High School. SHS still fell 23-5. It was a pretty good team with lots of good, strong runners. All our guys played well though half the team was brand new, Steele said. We could actually pass the ball, and well continue to get better. The SHS Spartans will play Highwood again on May 21, but rst must deal with prior games. The Spartans played Bow Valley on April 16 at home before the time of print, and also have a game at home on April 30 following Spring Break. Well have to be more consistent with the ball handling I dont know if it was the weather or not, but we didnt pass the ball very well, Steele said. We also have to make some better decisions on the eld during the game, but that comes with our lack of experience. We did lots of good things.

Spartans split
ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Having lost their rst game to Bev Facey Community High School 25-10, the Strathmore High School Spartan girls came back strong an hour later, defeating Old Scona Academic High School 10-0 on April 12 in Edmonton for the Icebreaker Rugby Tournament. The name suited this weekend, said Spartans coach Jerry Flaws. The subzero temperatures and rst game of the year for both teams made for a difcult game. The girls showed stronger tackling and ball-handling as the day went on, and showed they could compete against larger city schools. They progressed nicely. They went from players having no idea what they were doing, to actually looking fairly organized, Flaws said of his ten new rookies. Flaws mentioned that because hes 60 yards away on the eld, he really relies on his returning players to guide them. I thought they were brilliant, he said. They brought the young players along with them. They really led. Thats the whole goal of this tournament is to get the new players to learn the game. The veterans are telling them where they need to be theyre the boss on

the eld. The Spartans will have faced Foothills Composite High School at home on April 16, before the time of print. Before that, Flaws and the girls will be working on organization. Now that theyve gured out what rugby is about, now theyll understand what were trying to do in practice, he said. Well break it down, and move through at 25 per cent of the speed. Itll be a lot of repeating until the light bulb goes off. Strathmore High School will have their next game following Spring Break on April 30 at home. The girls are also hosting rugby provincials this year.

Wild ring
ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Wheatland Wildre basketball began its sixth season in the beginning of April, and hosted their rst tournament at home from April 11-12. The program has been consistently growing; roughly 80 kids are involved with the U13 and U16 levels both boys and girls. Its not like high school stuff where kids are totally committed. This is skill development. If you can make it, you can make it, Coach Kyle Larson said. Larson focuses on fundamentals with the younger groups, but tries to train the older players to perfect their skills. He often splits the groups due to the large age range. Its hard because so many of our kids, especially the high school kids, are multi-sport. Ive got kids playing rugby and badminton, he said. Right now, the boys and girls play on separate nights once a week. After spring break, up until the end of May, practices will move to twice a week.

Lots of clubs will run right into summer and do stuff in July, but Ive kind of always told our parents that we want to nish at the end of May so kids have June to do exams, Larson said. The Wildre teams will also travel for tournaments specically Okotoks and Chestermere but play Calgary-

We had a little girl this past weekend, where it was the rst game shed ever played. Whereas, this club, is playing all the time. Theyre very good.

Lunch Hour Yoga thoughts

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Becky Stone, owner of Pranava Yoga, wants the opinion of the town for her new Lunch Hour Yoga. The classes began at the beginning of April running Mondays and Fridays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. but Stone wants to make sure that time works best for potential yogis. Were looking to offer a mid-day yoga break for those who are working. Its a great way to spend your lunch hour, Stone said. Were trying to get feedback from the community about what their needs might be. It will depend on the exibility of her instructors, and if her studio is available, but Stone wants to have a schedule that works for lunch come June. No matter what your occupation is, yoga can assist to make you more comfortable throughout your day, and even into your week. Physically, being seated for an extended amount of time tends to shorten hamstrings and tighten up hips. Backs can become really stiff too. If youre working at a desk, on a computer, shoulders and necks get ridiculous tight. If youre standing on your feet all the time, your feet get sore, Stone said. Finding a mid-day break, taking a few deep breaths, and gaining some tools that youll be able to take back to your work day its an amazing opportunity to balance yourself. Practicing yoga once a day eliminates stress, which causes inammation in the body, leading to disease, said Stone. Mentally and emotionally, because we get tense under a lot of pressure maybe trouble with our coworkers or whatever it is it effects you very, very physically, she said. Pranava also has showers on site for those who want to tidy up before returning to work. Those interested are encouraged to complete a survey for Lunch Hour Yoga times at www.pranavayoga.ca, or to e-mail their opinion to info@pranavayoga.ca -- and will be given a free yoga class pass for their help.

Exposure to in-line
ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Into its fourth year, the Wheatland In-line Hockey Association began their Exposure Camp on April 13 at the Strathmore Family Centre. President Lynne Kozma is running four age groups U8, U10, U14, and U16 with 82 players, and still room for more. Were really growing, Kozma said. Numbers are up by 22 this year. Its very exciting. Though exciting, Kozma mentioned that the lack of oor time in Strathmore is hurting the association. If we continue to grow at these numbers, were going to be in trouble, she said. Indus has a league. Didsbury has a league. We could be playing games against them but we have no night times. We cant play against other towns but were growing to that ability. Some of Kozmas players have never played hockey before; 75 per cent of her younger age groups are on in-line skates for the rst time. My whole goal is to give kids advantages for the hockey season, she said. In the older age groups, theyre seeing the kids go from Tier 6 hockey to Tier 1 hockey. Their hockey sense is improving, their skating is improving, and their puck-handling is improving. In-line hockey is 4-on-4 rather than 5-on-5, and therefore improves defensively play, Kozma mentioned. You have to set up in a box defense, she said. You cant

If you have short and choppy strides, youre going to fall, she said. You cant coast playing in-line. You have to keep your feet moving. Its exhausting. The option of in-line hockey for the summer is more affordable too, Kozma says. Wheatland In-line even advertises used equipment for kids to use during the summer.

GDAY MATES! That was the greeting that we heard so often, on my recent trip to Australia and New Zealand. Or in Fiji, the greeting was Bula! Not to rub it in, but I have just returned from an extended visit to Australia, where I experienced and learned many things. Yes, it was warm there. Yes, there are big snakes and bugs there. Yes Ayres Rock is an impressive natural piece of rock ... and yes Koala Bears are every bit as cuddly as they appear! But the thing that I realized the most, that I think is signicant to all of us, is that, even on the other side of the world, where they cant see the North Star but they have the Southern Cross, where it is fall right now as we enter into spring, is that, the people are very much the same as you and I. The children love to play in the sand, and laugh and participate in sports. The people like to greet people and share their pride and the beauty of their land. They like to get away on holidays, and they live and work and ... well, simply put, they, and we, are all basically the same. In Gods divine plan for the world, people were an important part of the arrangement. To us, God gave dominion, and a charge to live and to care for all things, as partners with him. And all around the world, people are in so many ways, the same. There is a basic sense of morality and desire to do the right thing. There is a joy found in new births, and a sorrow expressed in death. There is dismay, and sometimes even anger and revulsion at injustice or cruelty. And there is celebration over accomplishments and reasons to rejoice. That reality should give all of us a sense of profound hope. God made so many of us, to work together. To help maintain order and well being and compassion in all that he has made. It has been thousands of years since creation, and sure, some things have changed a bit, we have missed the mark in some ways, but still, people have worked together to fulll Gods plan, and you have to admit, it is still a pretty wonderful world where we live. It also should encourage us, in how we carry on from here. As we met new people, as we talked about where we come from, (one day it was +40 there and -40 here, a little hard for us to comprehend an 80 degree difference), in Christ, we really are one. And his great commandment, to love God, and to love one another, is as relevant now as it has ever been. In Gods sight, in Gods plan, we are all one. May we see in that truth, a powerful opportunity to work together to make it our mission to care for the world, for one another, to keep the world that God has blessed us with, as wonderful as we know it can be. We are entering into the season of growing and new life. As we watch the earth green up, and see the baby animals and the owers, may we rejoice in being able to combine our abilities and our passions and our unity and together, keep making our community, our country, and our world a place that radiates Gods love and creative beauty ... because really, we are all one, in his eyes may we be one in our view as well ... amen. Matrix ip to sixth
ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter For the Strathmore Matrix Cheer Teams last competition of the year, the team placed a respectable sixth out of more than 100 teams in Edmonton on April 12. We did really good, head coach Cassi Weiss said. It was the teams best performance of the year, so Im really proud of them. There was lots of competition, but we nished with a nalist trophy. The team of 19 18 girls and one boy ranged from 6-yearsold to 15-years-old, and progressed largely from the start of the year. At the beginning of the season, many of them came in with no experience at all. By the end, they had full skill levels with tumbling and backhand springs, Weiss said. Were a Level 2 team, so that means we build stunts up to extension levels, where the arms are at full length over your head. Registration is now open for the 2014-2015 squad, whose season begins on June 2. There are various tryouts, but we try to do it more like placements, Weiss said. We just like to see what team youd t best on. Weiss hopes to move from this seasons one squad with a wide age range, to a few smaller teams next season. For the rst time since Matrix began, the Cheer Team is hoping for a Level 3 group, who would perform back tucks and twisting skills. Cheerleading is a great sport for self-condence, Weiss said. Its a good team sport that has lots of different areas for different skills and body types; and its a sport for girls and boys, so its great for everyone to come together. Weiss is in her third year with Matrix and said, Im really looking forward to next season.

Six Spartans step up to provincials

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Six Strathmore High School (SHS) Spartans will be advancing to badminton provincials from May 2-3 in Lethbridge, because of a successful showing at zones in Olds on April 12. The team combined for 18 medals in total. Senior Jessica Murphy who won bronze last year at provincials and has attended since her Grade 10 year and Shayla Pollock advanced, after each earned silver in singles. Jayden Smith won bronze at last years provincials as well; he won singles gold at zones, similar to Lauren Zandee. The only Spartans doubles team to advance was the gold winning pair of Jared Dougan and Reid Muenchrath. We also had four teams nish in silver, coach Kenton Zandee said. Unfortunately, in doubles, only the winning team advances to provincials, whereas in singles, the top two at zones advance. Thats probably going to be changed for next year. I would have had another eight players there, which is too bad. Ive been lobbying to get that second team put in for decades. Winds of change are upon us, Zandee said. The zones banner or team total was not awarded in Olds, but Zandee knows it belongs to SHS. I cant foresee any way that we would not have taken it. I dont see anybody beating us, he said. They only started awarding the banner about six or seven years ago. But to be quite honest, if they had a banner before that, we probably would have won it 15 out of the last 20 years. Zandee will be focusing on ne-tuning in practice for his six players heading to Lethbridge, including giving them situational advice. The players who got to provincials obviously are very accomplished badminton players. They have the skillset for the most part, he said. Its more of me instructing them what shots to play in certain situations. Once they learn that, they become very tough players to play against. Zandee also mentioned that you never know what teams are going to show up in provincials some of whom they will never have heard of before. But I think the team that is there for us, theyll have a very good showing, he said. I think we have an outside shot of winning the provincial title, but it depends on how they do and who they get stacked up against.

New King on throne

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter The Strathmore Wheatland Kings have found their new bench boss former Calgary Royals AA midget coach, Jeremy Blumes, who brings 14 years of experience, alongside Coach of the Year accolades from Hockey Calgary. Ive been looking for a new challenge, to coach at the next level, Blumes said, having future aspirations to eventually coach junior. Coaching the Wheatland Kings is the natural next step. Blumes spent the last four years with the Royals, winning provincials this past season. He is also currently the Southern Alberta scout for the Port Alberni Bulldogs of the BCHL. I think the biggest reason for our success (with the Royals) in the last little while is making sure the players understand their role and importance giving them ownership. Coaches today cant be dictators. It is about creating that team environment, Blumes said. I really only have three rules that guide everything we do: the team comes rst, we get better every day, and we have fun. Although Blumes has an impressive winning record, he measures his success by the development of the players he coaches. A few of his former protgs have gone onto the NCAA. Players of mine who had intentions to play at a higher level, they have gone on to play at a higher level, Blumes said. Its not solely because of the coach; a lot of it is the attention to detail and work that the player put in. As a coach, its rewarding to see. Were delighted, Wheatland Kings Vice President of Hockey Doug Murphy said. He brings everything that we need to the team. Those things include organization, attention to detail, and a great passion for coaching, Murphy mentioned. I know a lot of the players that hes coached. Theyve been extremely well taught and they love him too, he said. Just talking to him as well, you can feel the enthusiasm that he has, and the excitement he has to start something new. Blumes brings along his assistant coach of four years, Shaun Norrie, with him to Strathmore. As a former player in the WHL, Norrie had stints with the Calgary Hitmen, the Vancouver Giants, and the Kootenay Ice winning the Memorial Cup with the latter in 2002. Hes got that playing experience, Blumes said. Every level Shaun has played at, hes won a championship. He understands what it takes to win. Blumes and Norrie will begin their preparation camp in August, with tryouts for the Wheatland Kings coming in September. Were still going to be in a rebuilding year, so we have some work to do, Murphy said. But Im very optimistic.
