Fifteen-Year-Old Donovan Battistus 300, Jake Rollins 300-825 at Lodi Lanes By Vince Albrecht RENO, Nev. - After a close call last year, Motion Plus Lanes of Greenfield, Wis., returned to the National Bowling Stadium and left its mark in the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships record books with the high- est team score in 111 years of tournament competition. The group posted games of 1,269, 1,177 and 1,115 for a 3,561 total, 23 pins bet- ter than the previous record of 3,538, rolled by 2013 Regular Team champion Lodge Lanes Too of Orlando, Fla. Janz's H.I. of Beaver Dam, Wis., previously held the lead at this year's event with 3,499, bowled just 24 hours earlier. Chad Kloss led the way for Motion Plus Lanes on Friday with a 762 series and was followed by former Junior Team USA member Chris Pierson (756), Chad Maas (717), Dave Beres (698) and two-time USBC Open Championships titlist Jeff Nimke (628). "We felt like even last year, we could have gotten more," said Kloss, who made his 14th Open Championships appearance. "Now that we've been together for another year, we knew we could score, and we did today." Last year, as Red Carpet Lanes of Waukesha, Wis., Kloss and his teammates finished their 2013 campaign with a 1,272 game, the third-highest in tournament his- tory, on the way to a 3,499 total, which now is tied for eighth all-time with Janz's H.I., and was good enough for a fifth-place finish. Kloss rolled a 300 game in last year's finale and started this team event with seven consecutive strikes. Their opening game of 1,269 ranks fourth all-time. "We bowl great together as a team," Kloss said. "We talk a lot, and there are no egos. This tournament, everybody gave everything. Whenever we come out here, that's the main goal - to leave everything out there and leave here emotionally and physically drained." When Lodge Lanes Too dramatically capped off its record-run on April 2 of last year, soon-to-be USBC Hall of Famer John Gaines and his teammates were a single pin ahead of the previous mark of 3,537 held by Bruegger's Bagels of Albany, N.Y., since 1993. Gaines said at the time that if his team could get there, others could, too, and the record wouldn't mean as much unless they held on to win. Now, Motion Plus Lanes is in the same position, knowing that many talented teams are scheduled to compete before the 2014 Open concludes July 13. "Winning would mean the world," said Kloss, who along with Beres, spent time as an exempt player on the Professional Bowlers Association Tour. "A lot of us have bowled on different levels. Winning a team eagle is the pinnacle of this sport, in my opinion." Mike Funtsch Manager Jason Oppelt Assistant Manager Jean Fulmore League Coordinator Bob Balzarek Junior Program Coordinator Call for more information: 201-391-3400 ALLEN PARK, Mich. Chris Barnes and his Silver Lake Atom Splitters teammates swept the Philadelphia Hitmen in the final Professional Bowlers Association League semifinal match to earn a berth in the 2014 Elias Cup finals against Jason Belmonte and his L.A. X team at Thunderbowl Lanes. After finishing in sixth place among eight teams in the 2013 introductory PBA League season, the Atom Splitters, presented by Spiceworks and owned by Internet podcast inno- vator and television host Chris Hardwick, bolstered their 2014 lineup with the addition of former PBA Players of the Year Tommy Jones and Wes Malott, and won 11 of a possible 12 points in matches against the Dallas Strikers and the Hitmen, pre- sented by High 5 Gear, to advance to the Elias Cup finals at Brunswick Zone Carolier in North Brunswick, N.J. Our team keeps getting better as we go, Barnes said. Well switch ven- ues for the Elias Cup, which will have an impact. Carolier hooks a lot less than Thunderbowl does. As far as L.A. Xs fearless leader (Australian two- handed star Belmonte) is concerned, thats not much of a deal, but I dont know about the rest of their team. They have a lot of good shot-makers, but so do we. I think were down to the two strongest teams. Belmonte agreed. The Atom Splitters are a stacked team, the L.A. X team leader said. I feel our performance speaks for itself. If theres a team thats going to give (Silver Lake) a run for their money, its us. Barnes gave Silver Lake a 1-0 lead by winning the singles match against Philadelphia franchise player Bill ONeill. Barnes survived a 3-4-6-7-10 split in the sixth frame after throwing five strikes to start the game. After he failed to convert the split, he threw another string of four strikes for a 248- 236 win. In alternate ball doubles, Philadelphias Josh Blanchard and Ryan Ciminelli threw back-to-back strikes in the ninth and 10th frames to overcome the Atom Splitters one-pin lead, but Barnes and partner Bryon Smith answered with three strikes in their 10th frame to pull out a 228-226 win for a 2-0 lead. Silver Lakes Tommy Jones, Dom Barrett and Wes Malott started the Baker trios contest with six strikes, building a 53-pin lead, and held on for a 233-216 win over Ciminelli, ONeill and Dan MacLelland for a 3-0 lead. The Atom Splitters completed the sweep with a convincing 247-224 vic- tory in the Baker team finale. Smith, Barnes, Barrett, Malott and Jones struck on eight of their first nine shots and Silver Lake never gave the Hitmen a chance. Were five players deep, Barnes said. We didnt bowl very well in our first match (against Dallas), but we survived that. We figured that was as bad as it could get, so we threw every- one back out there and it worked out. We just dont like to lose. Ever. Ana DeLeon, Karl Kattermann Top Youth Travelers By Vince Albrecht MONTVALE, NJ - Karl Kattermann had the sessions best threesome with 238-248-203: 689 and 13-year-old Adam Gelvan, in his finest out- ing of the season, scored an impressive 195-201-201: 597 to lead Boonton to a hard-earned, closely contested 2998-2984 five points in a matchup against powerful Bowler City I. Wondering what they had to do to take a game after dropping the high-scoring middle game, 1036-1030, the persistent BC I quartet salvaged two points by taking the finale, 1000-977. Hackensack senior Welmer Paguay flogged the pins with 253-223: 667, Kyle Schellberg 212-213: 618, Vin Santoro 222-214, Kristen Kane 185-194 as BC I struck for a net 2420, one of three teams to break 2400 on the afternoon. Holiday posted 2433 scratch in its 2901-2830 five-point triumph over Bowler City II, thus maintaining its hold on the top rung. Former Paramus Catholic standout Anastasia DeLeon exploded for 234-211- 224: 669, Frank Magyar 219-214, Graham Mulligan 211-205 and Nick Cilento 204 for the Holiday squad. Leading BC II were Ridgefield Park senior Alex Voorhees 241-203: 627 and Paramus Catholic-bound George Held 232. Montvale pounded out 2409 and seven deuces in coasting to a sweep of Lodi; thirteen-year-old anchor Matt Russell lift- ed his average to just shy of 190 by crunching the maples with a neat triple deuce 212-234-213: 659. Perhaps inspired by Matt, the other members of the New York contin- gent all rolled fine games: Jessica Torres 224-221, Katie Didonato 211- 196-205: 612 and Chris Torres 189-184. Shorthanded Lodis best came from eleven-year-old Louis Ferrante 211 and Chris Navarros pair of 203 scores.
