1998, a middle school which was built in 1998 at a cost of $10 million, and a high school that wasbuilt in 1959 and recently underwent a $2 million renovation. The rural area is rich in history andprovides the community with a variety of nearby outdoor activities including skiing, biking, hiking,boating and whitewater rafting. Meyersdale is well known as the host of the Pennsylvania MapleFestival and proximity to Mount Davis, the highest elevation in Pennsylvania. The area has seena reduction in both agriculture and manufacturing forcing individuals to commute to other areasfor employment. Young adults are relocating for employment creating a community ofpredominantly retired individuals.The Meyersdale Area School District prides itself in providing a safe and healthy learningenvironment for students. Meyersdale Area recognizes learning as a life-long pursuit requiringcommunity involvement. The school district provides a comprehensive educational system frompre-kindergarten through grade twelve, including regular instruction, special instruction,vocational education, dual college enrollment, and necessary support services. The goal of theschool district is the "Pursuit of Excellence" in education. Seventy-eight teachers, fiveadministrators, four supervisors, and 49 support staff members operate the district on a 2007-08budget of $13.4 million.
