NATESC advises not to use buprofezin to control brown rice planthopper
Key words: Wheat pests, formulations, subsidiary transfer, registration, annual report, net profits In order to find out the actual effect and pesticide resistance in field of buprofezin on controlling brown rice planthopper, in 2013, the NATESC carried out field test of buprofezin on brown rice planthopper in four places. The test result showed that five days after using the pesticides, field control effect in four places of HanJiang, LuJiang, Shanggao and Yongfu was 40.1%-61.0%, and after ten days, the control effect was 31.0%-63.3%. The NATESC also organized Nanjing Agricultural University, Central China Agricultural University, Plant Protection Research Institute, Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Science, etc. to monitor the resistance of brown rice planthopper to buprofezin in 28 monitoring spots in ten provinces in China. The result showed that the resistance of 28 monitoring spots was all at high level and extremely high level. And levels of resistance of brown rice planthopper to buprofezin in 11 of these monitoring spots were higher than 160 times, which was in extremely high resistance. Among these, the level of resistance in Leizhou City was monitored to be the highest, with 711 times and the levels of resistance in other 17 monitoring spots were lower than 160 times, being in high resistance. Under the circumstance that brown rice planthopper has acquired high and extremely high resistance to buprofezin in China, the NATESC suggested stopping using buprofezin during the control of brown rice planthopper in rice production provinces and alternately using pesticides with different acting mechanisms, such as pymetrozine, nitenpyram, etc. This will defer the development of brown rice planthopper's resistance. The problem of pest and disease resistance is not only the important one which disturbs a majority of growers and pesticide production enterprises, but also the serious problem threatening the quality and safety of agricultural produces. To solve this problem, on one side, pesticide production enterprises should develop new products and timely adjust the products structure. On the other side, to use pesticide scientifically and this one is more important for the current ability of new pesticide develop ability in China. Scientific rotation of pesticides use different mechanisms of actions is one of the most effective ways to delay pesticide resistance. It is extremely urgent to instruct growers to rationally take turns to use pesticides, slowing down the pesticide resistance. It is worth noting that the rotation of pesticides should not be arbitrary but rational and reasonable. Pesticides with different mechanisms of action must be rotated to function. Pesticides with the same mechanism of action should not be rotated. For example, carbendazim cannot be rotated with thiophanate-methyl or benomyl. Most Chinese farmers are currently unprofessional, and they perform rotation of pesticides depending on their experience. Therefore, plant protection organizations, pesticide companies

and dealers should adjust their solutions to local conditions, provide local growers with effective schemes on rotation of specific pesticides to delay the pesticide resistance of insect pests. China's pesticide industry witnessed an increasing performance in 2013 as expected. Such is the case with Jiangsu Changqing Agrochemical Co., Ltd., which is the first one to release annual report of 2013 among the listed pesticide enterprises in China. The company has seen a year-on-year growth of over 20% of revenue and net profit in 2013, and it was predicted to see a more remarkable performance in 2014. In hope of progress, other listed pesticide enterprises such as Zhejiang Shenghua Biok Biology Co., Ltd. and Zhejiang Qianjiang Biochemical Co., Ltd. optimized their business positively in the year by transferred subsidiaries' share. Besides, technology innovation is another essential way for further develop the pesticide industry in China. R&D of new formulation types is one of the innovation trends. In Feb. 2014, Chinese Academy of  Agricultural Sciences initiated a research project to develop a new nano pesticide formulation.  Additionally, in these years, numbers of domestic enterprises turn to water-based products, which are supposed to have promising market prospects. The formulations, including EW, SC, SE and other water-based formulations tend to attract attentions in the coming years. Meanwhile, some insect pests' resistance to traditional pesticides like brown rice planthopper resistant to buprofezin keep enhancing, stimulating the demand for pesticide technology innovation. Thus, domestic pesticide enterprises are supposed to increase R&D investment for continuous development. The NATESC released the monitoring result of brown rice planthopper's resistance to buprofezin, which showed that buprofezin is not suitable to control brown rice planthopper. In recent years, water-based abamectin formulations draw broad attention from industry under the circumstance of the whole abamectin market has been shocked consistently. Farmers are expecting quality bird repellents due to increasingly serious bird damage. For agrochemical enterprises, such a situation brings about some business opportunities undoubtedly.
