Everybody seems to have a cellphone these days. Cell phones arenot really phones. They are two-wayradios. A cell phone changes yourvoice into radio waves.Lots of everyday items use radiowaves. Radios, TVs, pagers, andcordless phones all use radio waves.Another term for radio waves isradio frequency energy. The shortterm for that is RF. Large amountsof RF are harmful to humans. Cellphones use only a small amountof RF. But some people think thateven a small amount of RF may beharmful.

Large amounts of RF can heatbody tissue. The heated tissuecan overheat other parts of thebody. The eyes and testes are mostlikely to overheat from RF. That’sbecause little blood goes to thoseareas. Blood can carry away largeamounts of heat.The amount of RF from cell phones,radios, and TV is too low to heatbody tissue. Still, some people havequestions about whether low levelsof RF can hurt people. More studiesare needed to find out what effectsactually occur and whether theycan hurt people.
