THE 1199 APPLIED THEATRE PERFORMANCE FALL SEMESTER, 2013 Instructor: Kimberly Borst Office: 2411C Email: Kimberly.borst@sinclair.

.edu Office Hours: By Appointment Phone Number: (937) 512-2938 Course Description: This course provides the student who is interested in performance aspects of production the opportunity to receive credit for practical experience. The student will complete projects that will develop his/her character and enhance his/her onstage experience. Goals: Apply classroom learning to live theatre experiences by participating in a departmental production. Demonstrate the ability to show up on time and be prepared. Demonstrate the ability to receive helpful criticism within a departmental theatre production. Demonstrate the ability to work as a team member on a departmental theatre production. Demonstrate effective work habits and discipline while performing in a departmental theatre production. Attendance and Tardies: You are expected to attend every rehearsal for which you are scheduled and you are also expected to arrive on time and be ready to work at the designated hour. In theatre, on time means early. You need to arrive at least 15 minutes early to warm up and prepare mentally and physically for your rehearsal/performance. It is unacceptable to be late for rehearsal. If you are tardy 3 times during the production, your grade for the course will be dropped one full letter grade. If you are tardy 4 times, your grade will be dropped an additional letter grade. If you are tardy 5 times, you will automatically fail this course. Any absences will result in an automatic failure of this course. I receive all rehearsal and performance reports. On these reports, the stage manager notes who arrives late. Keep in mind, if you are even one minute late, it will be noted.

Assignments: 1. Create a visual representation of your character. This can take the form of a collage or a PowerPoint of images that speak to you about your character. You need to use at least 15 different images, but you can use many more. If you choose to do a collage, it needs to be presented on poster board of at least 18 x 24 in size. Be creative. This does not need to be a literal representation. Decide what your character is fighting for, your characters background, inner desires, fears, joys, etc. DUE: Thursday, September 5. 2. Journal: Journaling your rehearsal and performance experience is one of the most valuable ways of absorbing and processing your development as an actor. I will expect a journal entry for every rehearsal you attend, up to and including opening night, beginning Monday, August 26. You can write about anything and everything you learn during the process, things that went well, things that frustrated you, and everything in between. I am the only one who will see this journal, so feel free to be as honest as you would like. But use this opportunity to reflect on your artistic/creative progress, no matter how small you view your role. DUE: Monday, October 14. Assignments can be turned in as a hard copy or through email. If you are emailing the assignment, it has to be in my inbox by 5:00 pm on the due date. Hard copies are due by the same time in my office or my inbox in Pattis office, Room 2221.
