Description
This is an exercise for my students this semester which involves them using statistical data and theoretical approaches to cultural and communication studies. We are spending part of this session on an interesting article written by Julian Vigo which successfully interprets theory and quantitative data in order to understand the different cultural values which a Moroccan spectatorship of soap operas values through the local interpretations of soap operas from Brazil, to Mexico, to Egypt, viewed daily by millions of Moroccans. How do people view across cultures? What are the commonalities and differences? How do these commonalities and differences function in terms of exacting indentity? Or, might spectatorship have little to do with interpretation and more to do with projection of identity?
