It is due to closure of AV valves and marks the onset of ventricular systole.

Low pitch Frequency 30-80/sec (loud sound) Making syllable L-U-B-B

DURATION
0.1 to 0.17 seconds

SITE
-can be heard all over the chest but best heard over mitral and tricuspid

Mitral area: located in 5th intercostal space internal to mid clavicular line Tricuspid area: located in left 5th intercostal space near the sternal border

CORRELATION
It coincides with the R-wave of E.C.G.
