The Upper Dauphin Area School District provides twelve (12) varsity interscholastic sports teams for its students:
 INTERSCHOLASTIC AFFILIATIONS
The Upper Dauphin Area School District participates in interscholastic competition in several different leagues(depending on the sport). In general, the District’s athletic teams participate in the Twin Valley Conference (Footballand Volleyball), the Tri Valley League and the Schuylkill League. All Upper Dauphin Area School District athletic teams compete in District III of the Pennsylvania InterscholasticAthletic Association (PIAA). In addition to the District’s rules, regulations and policies contained in this handbook, allsports teams must also abide by the rules, regulations and procedures of the PIAA. More information about the PIAAmay be found at
www.piaa.org
. The district and state playoff systems are also governed by the PIAA.In each sport, Upper Dauphin Area’s athletic teams are assigned to a “class” system (see above) based on the size of the student population within the high school. The number of boys in the school is used to determine the class for  boy’s sports and the number of girls in the school is used to determine the class for girl’s sports. Consequently, theclass for each sport can change from year to year as the school population changes. The impact of moving up to thenext class usually means more challenging competition because the schools in that class have more students to participate within their athletics program. In both boy’s and girl’s track and field, Upper Dauphin is considered AAA(triple-A) due to a cooperative agreement with the Line Mountain School District in which Line Mountain athletes may participate on Upper Dauphin’s track and field teams. Consequently, the student populations of both schools are usedto calculate “class.”
