In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate theMerciful
Translator’s Preface
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds andbenedictions upon the Messenger of Allah and hisPurified Progeny (a.s.)By the Grace of the Almighty, the first volume of
“Greater Sins”
has been completed in English. The significance of Moral Science and Ethics isevident from the words of the Messenger of Allah(s.a.w.s.) when he has described the aim of his advent. He said, “I have been sent for perfecting the morals.” The learned Aalim, Ayatullah Dastghaib was oneof the greatest
(Teacher of MoralScience). Some of his important books are
GunahaneKabira, Qalbe Saleem, Maad, Barzakh
etc. His bookscover various moral and ethical issues. The book
Gunahane Kabira
deals with GreaterSins. Ayatullah Dastghaib has exhaustively explainedthe phenomenon of sin, the classification of sins, andthe necessity of avoiding sins. He has also describedfifty different types of Greater Sins.Although the English translation is based on theUrdu Edition, I have relied upon the original Arabic textwhile translating traditions and Quranic verses.Since the English equivalents of Islamicterminology do not convey the exact meaning, I haveused the Arabic terms. However those who are notconversant with Arabic words may refer to the Glossaryof Islamic Terms.Wassalaam.Syed Athar Husain S.H.Rizvi.
A Short Biography of Ayatullah Dastaghaib
Martyr Ayatullah Dastghaib was a noblemanfrom a highly religious family that was known forits intellectual heritage going back to 800 years.Due to religious and spiritual atmosphere, resulting from such a sound Islamic backgroundhe had a natural and spontaneous tendencytowards acquiring knowledge. After obtainingelmentary education in his hometown, he movedtowards Najaf-e-Ashraf (Iraq) in pursuit of higherknowledge. In the town of the abode of the Chief of thebelievers, Ali Ibne Abi Talib (a.s.), he continuedhis studies associating with the various scholarsand teachers. InShiraz he spent lacs of tumans for theconstruction of the Jame Masjid Ateq which wasin a highly dilapidated condition. There, hebegan to lecture on the exegesis of the Quranand ethics. His persistent efforts raised thestandard of education of the Hauz-e-Ilmia of Shiraz in the various fields of Fiqh, Beliefs andMoral science. The irreligious and tyrannicalShah imposed restrictions upon him and he wasarrested many times. He was also put underhouse arrest by the autocratic ruler.
