Executive Summary
Young Volunteers Celebrate the Fourth AnnualGlobal Youth Service Day in 127 countries!
At a time when terrorism and war continues toimpact the lives of people worldwide, millions of young people continue to set new records forvolunteerism and community service. Global YouthService Day has managed to become, sincelaunching in 2000, the largest celebration of youngvolunteers. Millions of youth around the worldhighlighted the power of volunteer service, fromAlbania to Zambia and from Korea to Peru.
The goals of Global Youth Service Day are to:
 
Recognize the year-round contributions thatyouth make to the development of theircommunities through volunteer service;
 
Mobilize youth and adults to support the needs of their communities through volunteering & mentoring
 
 
Recruit a new generation of volunteers
 Global Youth Service Day grew out of thesuccessful experience of National Youth ServiceDay, held annually for the past 15 years in theUnited States, which mobilizes millions of youngpeople in service projects each April. NationalYouth Service Day and its new global format arethe inspiration of Youth Service America (YSA), aresource center and an alliance of 300+organizations working to increase the quality andquantity of opportunities for young people to servelocally, nationally, and globally.Global Youth Service Day is organized andmanaged by YSA and the Global Youth ActionNetwork, together with a consortium of international organizations and over 125 nationalcoordinating committees.

Brazil 
, more than 10,000 participated in thecelebrations, which were recognized byPresident Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Bulgaria 
, National Service Week succeededin mobilizing 10,000 young volunteers.
 
In
Chile

National Meeting of Volunteerswas held and followed by a meeting withPresident Ricardo Lagos on volunteerism.
 
The GYSD celebrations in
Lebanon 
mobilizedstudents in 52 schools throughout the countrywho undertook 71 service projects.
 
In
Russia 
the GYSD and Spring Week of Volunteers succeeded in mobilizing 136,000young people in more than 1300 projectsthroughout the country!
 
In
Taiwan 
, 15,000 young people took partin over 615 service projects, including a 25-city bike-a-thon.
 
In the
Philippines 
, President
 
GloriaMacapagal-Arroyo attended the NationalYouth Eco Camp, as part of the celebrations.
