Atrial FibrillationAtrial Fibrillation(AF)(AF)Atrial FibrillationAtrial Fibrillation(AF)(AF)
By Stephanie ChiengBy Stephanie Chieng
AF is a cardiac arrhythmia (abnormal heartrhythm) that involves the two upper chambers(atria) of the heart. It is a loss of atrial contribution to ventricularfilling (inefficient movement of blood toventricles due to incomplete filling of atria)
Introduction (cont’)
In AF, the normal electrical impulses (by theSA node) are overwhelmed by disorganizedelectrical impulses that originated in the atriaand pulmonary veins, leading to conduction ofirregular impulses to the ventricles thatgenerate the heartbeat. The result is an irregular heartbeat which mayoccur in episodes lasting from minutes toweeks, or it could occur all the time for years.
