EUROPEAN LEFT ANALYSING THE RESULTS OF
THE EUROPEAN ELECTIONS
The Executive Board of the European Left met in an extraordinary ses
sion on Friday, 12 June, mainly to analyse the results of the European
elections and discuss ways of cooperation in the new political setting.
Several member and observer parties of the European Left came out
ahead with great success, such as the Portuguese Bloco de Esquerda (3
seats), the French Communist Party as part of Front de Gauche (5 seats),
the Cypriot party AKEL (2 seats), the Communist Party of Bohemia and
Moravia (4 seats), and Germany's DIE LINKE (8 seats). Also SYRIZA
(Greece) and Izquierda Unida-ICV-EUiA (Spain) gathered seats in the
next EP's GUE/NGL group.
"However, the results of the left parties in the European elections as a
whole are not a success" remarked Lothar Bisky, EL chairman, in his
opening speech. "The new GUE/NGL group will count up to nine mem
bers less than in 2004-2009. The first overview of the results shows: The
split of the Left leads to losses in the elections.” Referring to the defeat
of the Italian Left also in the press conference, Lothar Bisky underlined
the necessity to continue the way of a close cooperation of the Left.
The common electoral platform was a fruitful beginning and an impor-
tant step for the development of the EL policies. In order to achieve the
aims described in the platform, the European Left is striving for a broad
left wing group in the European Parliament and will be open to coop
eration with all those who share the ideas of a social, ecologically sus-
tainable, more democratic and peaceful Europe.
The final results of the European Parliament elections held throughout
Greece were as follows:
PASOK, 36.65 percent (1,878,696 votes)
New Democracy (ND)32.29% (1,655,461 votes)
Communist Party(KKE) 8.35% (428,209 votes)
Popular Orthodox Rally (LA.OS) 7.15% (366,562 votes)
Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) 4.70% (240,865 votes)
Ecologists -Greens 3.49% (178,952 votes)

STUDENTS’ ELECTIONS
Last May the students’ elections took part in the background of Decembers'
great youth revolt. The “Left Unity’, after two years of its foundation, proved
that itis @ competitive and radical pole in the Greek universities. After the last
years’ big rise, the electoral fall was small, but the number of the student as
sociations that the “Left Unity” participated was the largest for the radical left
in the last decade. The “Left Unity’ will continue its struggle against the neo-
liberal transformation of the Greek and European universities.
IMMIGRANTS
After the European elections of June 2009, the goverment has adopted
some of the basic topics of the policy of LAOS (far extreme party which in-
creased its electoral power at these elections). These topics are: immigrants
expulsions, evacuations of immigrants’ camps and massive and most of the
times, violent arrests. Neolaia Synaspismou, against the rise of racism and
xenophobia, fights for the rights of immigrants. Claiming for the legalization
of the immigrants, we participate and organize supportive and solidarity
12th Alternative Camping of Neolaia Synaspismou
Over 1.200 young people have attended the 12th Alternative SummerCamp of
Neolaia Synaspismou in Santa Maria, Paros. From the 24th of July until the 2nd
of August comrades from all over Greece have met and discussed on the
future of Radical Left in Greece and Europe, on all the necessary actions
against neoliberalism and the privatization policy of the Greek government
and on the neoliberal attack against social rights. This camping had the big-
gest attendance of all years and we feel confident that in the forthcoming year
Neolaia Synaspismou will play an important role in the contruction of more
powerful social movements in Greece and Europe,
EL SUMMER UNIVERSITY
Neolaia Synaspismou participated in the 4th European Left Party Summer
University which was held in Valencia, Spain from 23 to 26 of July.
The four days gave the opportunity to dozens of comrades from across
Europe to discuss the problems the peoples of Europe face in the middle of
the economic crisis, rights issues, migration, labor, in the light of the conclu-
sions of the recent European elections. Within this framework, we spotted the
necessity of discussing for the left in Latin America and its efforts towards so-
cialism of the 21st century. Moreover, Neolaia Synaspismou held meetings
with youth organizations of the European Left parties, exchanging experi
ences on the actions and policies, but also on the need for common steps of
our organizations at European level in the context of our internationalist soli-
darity and common struggle against neoliberalism. The organization was rep
resented by the members of CC and the International Relations Giorgos Karat-
sioubanis and Zisis Zannas.
