Hugh Doyle knew he had to dosomething to create change, whena fellow student claimed climatechange was a hoax, according to anOtago Daily Times article. The PhD student studying chemi-cal oceanography at the Universityof Otago inDunedin, was one of eight NewZealandersselected tobe trainedby Al Gore,Nobel Peaceprize winnerand formerUS vicepresident, with up todate climateinformation.Hugh will open this year’s Hamp-den Community Energy’s AnnualGeneral Meeting on Monday Sep-tember 21. It is timely to be able tohear directly from a young informedperson on what the options are andwhy, when national greenhouse gasemissions targets will be set at Co-penhagen in December. Some saythis will be crucial for us all.His 30 minute talk will be followedby the mov-ie “Home”by YannArthus-Bertrand.(Somemay recallseeing his“ViewsfromAbove”display onthe Wanakaforeshoretwo yearsago.) It’s an inspiring aerial presen-tation of the beauty and fragility of our planet, and the decisions facingus. The AGM starts at 7pm on Mon-day September 21 in the HampdenHall. You are all invited.

The Hampden and DistrictMemorial Community Centre is
over fty years old.
It requires more maintenanceand refurbishment as the years
roll on.
A year ago the committee decidedto upgrade the doctor’s rooms
and the library foyer. Planningand getting hold of ttings andfurniture takes time. The carpet
was purchased from Oamaruwool spinners, while a visit toMitre 10 in Dunedin one wetAugust day provided a vanity, cupboards and bench top, plus
some other fittings. A smart
little water heater arrived from
Wellington. With a plumber and
carpet layer employed, ‘voila’ the rooms
looked cosier and more inviting.
Next on the list were the antiquated
radiant heaters in the concert hall. Heatpumps became the obvious choice. These
were bought from Waitaki Refrigeration
and quickly and efciently installed by

them in November.
Love them or hate them the heat pumps
quickly give an overall ambience. The
warmth has been noticed this winter by
the small group playing indoor bowls.
The latest project has been the sanding
