Why Do Men Want More Testosterone?
Not everyone who asks me for testosterone needs it; as a matter of fact, most don't. Alittle herbal there, a little talk therapy there, most men are just fine at being men.At one point, when I was doing a lot of transgendering of patients, I was in constant fear that two biological women on testosterone would meet each other and duke it out. (Myhusband said he would break things up if that ever happened.) It is not unusual to seehigher testosterone levels bring about characterological changes. Some of my patientshave told me that with other physicians, their families have complained of such. Bygoing slowly and gently, I have been able to avoid that one. There is no doubt in my mind that the entire field of endocrinology started whenmedicine was more male dominant and men wanted to wow women with their potency.Early academic work on castration and such was done in fowl by a
.But to really spice things up, it took
,a half-French half-American physician scientist. This Parisian doctor injected himself with a "rejuvenating serum"made of dog and guinea-pig testicle and reported this in the revered British medical journal,
(Incidentally, the short-lived effects the venerated physician-scientistreported were probably a placebo effect anyway.)(Brown Sequard is in the historical section.) There have been too many attempts to injectmen with animal testicles or testosterone to even chronicle them here.Actually, I think many women like long walks and cuddles better than overwhelming potency. Men, aided and abetted by other men, still seem to focus on testosterone. There are "rejuvenation clinics" that feed men testosterone. They feel "younger" andhave better muscle definition (which many women do not care much about, either).Perhaps there is some interest in knowing what makes testosterone go up and down. Isuppose men could then raise and lower what they got, instead of doing injections or transdermals.I have got to admit this is an avenue of research that I would never have thought of.Men's testosterone levels
when Obama was elected. The best thing I can sayabout this one is that nobody has tried to correlate testosterone levels with partisan politics. The hypothesis, which is cute, is that male testosterone levels can be a functionof vicarious (secondary) and not just primary experience.
