OUR HISTORY
Pittsburgh Brashear High School is named forJohn A. Brashear (1840 – 1920), a gifted scientist. Although he had little formal education and beganworking in the steel mills as a millwright, he tookup the hobby of lens making. By 1876, with helpfrom his wife, Phoebe, he completed his first lensand many telescopes. Before his death in 1920,his instruments were found in every importantobservatory in the world. During the latter partof his career, he served as president of WesternUniversity of Pennsylvania (now the Universityof Pittsburgh), and he headed the committee thatfounded Carnegie Institute of Technology (nowCarnegie Mellon University). His life and accom-plishments are an inspiration to the PittsburghBrashear High School community,and our motto –aquote from his writing – embodies his philosophy.

Student’s Responsibility
 All students are expected to follow the rules andregulations of the Board of Education, the schooladministrators, individual teachers, and other staff.Students are required to be courteous, polite, andcontribute to good school climate.During the school day, you are responsible foracting in a way that will help you do your best andpermit others to do their best. Use common senseand good manners to create a pleasant schoolenvironment. Make every effort to pay attentionand complete all assignments.You are expected to arrive at all classes on time.You have four minutes between classes. Beprepared for your classes each day by being ontime with completed homework, pencil or pen,notebook, and textbook. Demonstrate respect forothers and for your school materials.

During class time you are not permitted to be inthe halls without an authorized blue corridor pass.Hall passes are intended for emergency use only. Acompleted hall pass must contain the student’sname, teacher’s name, time of departure, anddestination. Students found in the hall withoutavalid pass must be prepared to accept theconsequences for this action.You are not permitted to sell any items on schoolgrounds unless the items are part of a school-sponsored activity.Once you arrive at school, you are not permittedto leave the building until the end of the school dayunless you are participating in an organized program,supervised by a staff member outside of school, oryou are officially dismissed by the school.Your parents send you to school to learn. You areexpected to attend school regularly, make a sincereeffort to improve yourself, and follow school rules.Students, parents, and faculty share responsibilityfor making Pittsburgh Brashear High School a goodplace to learn. No student has the right to interferewith his fellow students’ education.
 Arrival
 All students and visitors must enter the schoolbuilding via the South Ground Floor Entrance(Entrance B). Security/safety procedures requirethat individuals must be scanned and have theirbelongings searched.
Tardiness to School
If you arrive late to school between the start of firstperiod and your homeroom period, you are toreport directly to class. If you arrive to school afteryour homeroom period, you are to report to thePupil Services Office to be marked tardy to schooland receive an admission slip to class. Studentswho are tardy will be issued detention.
Early Dismissals
When requesting an early dismissal, you mustreport to your appropriate assistant principal’soffice before first period.You must have a medical notice listing the dateand time of appointment and/or a signed writtenrequest from a parent or legal guardian.Your name, phone number,grade, andhomeroom must be on the request.All early dismissal requests will be verified viatelephone by a parent or legal guardian. If wecannot contact your parent or guardian, wereserve the right to deny your request for anearly dismissal.It is the student’s responsibility to providetransportation to an early dismissal destination.The school cannot supply bus tickets for earlydismissals.You are encouraged to schedule all appointmentsafter school hours.
Make-up Work Procedures
If you are legally absent from school or suspended,you will be given a reasonable length of time tocomplete missing assignments. The parents ofstudents who miss school for an extended periodshould call the student’s counselor to obtainassignments. Students who will be away fromschool for an approved reason should obtainassignments from their teachers before they leave. All assignments should be completed and turnedin on the day you return to school.Responsibility for requesting and obtaining make-upwork resides with the student and parents. Studentswho fail to request and complete make-upassignments must accept the consequences.
Closing School in Emergencies
Sometimes it is necessary to close school whensuch conditions as extreme weather emergenciesmake it impossible to stay open. Should the weatherlook so bad that you suspect school might beclosed, please do not call the school. Announcements will be made on TV and radiostations (e.g. KDKA, WTAE, KQV, WWSW, WAMO,etc.) In the event of a two-hour delay, school willbegin two hours later than usual; buses willconduct pick-up and arrival two hours laterthan usual. On days when the weather becomeshazardous after you arrive and school has begun,we rarely have an ‘announced official’ earlydismissal. However, if the situation warrantsand buses arrive early,you may be dismissed.
School Dress Code
The Board of Education adopted a policy regardingdress codes for all students attending PittsburghPublic Schools. Every school must adhereto theexclusionary dress code which prohibits studentsfrom wearing any article of clothing or jewelry thatadvocates or promotes the use of alcohol or drugs,violence, race discrimination, sexual activity, orneighborhood affiliation.Individual schools can adopt and implementuniforms or a prescribed dress. Brashear High School, we take pride in theappearance of our students and have adopted anappropriate dress policy. Appropriate dress reflectsthe quality of the school and school conduct. Weencourage students to dress in an appropriate wayand realize that inappropriate dress can distractfrom the educative process. It is the purpose ofour school in the manner of dress and groomingto enhance the health and safety of all studentsand to avoid distractions in the classrooms orinterference with schoolwork. With regard toinappropriate dress, the following information willbe helpful:Spandex, low cut revealing blouses, body suits,midriffs, muscle men tops, tank tops, tube tops,fish nets, spaghetti straps, bathing suit tops,open shouldered tops, andsee-through tops are a distraction and are notappropriate.Hats, bandanas, do-rags, headbands, and coatsare not to be worn in class; thesearticles must be placed in lockers.Clothing, jewelry, and body tattoos with obsceneor profane language, reference to alcohol or ille-gal substances, depictions of violence (includingpictures and/or words), or neighborhood affilia-tions are prohibited.Tight, revealing clothing is never appropriatefor school and cannot be worn.Skirts and shorts must be no shorter than twoinches above the knee. No cut-out jeans arepermitted.Flip-flop sandals or thongs (beach wear) areunsafe in the school building; shoes need to besecure to the feet.All pants must be worn at the waist – lowhanging pants/underwear is offensive in school.No flannel pants or pajama-like wear ispermitted.Pocket chains, metal spike jewelry or other heavymetal paraphernalia is dangerous and presentsproblems at the metal detectors. These items willbe confiscated by Security.Students participating in school activities areexpected to adhereto appropriate dress policy.Failure to follow policy will exclude an individualfrom the activity. These activities include awardassemblies, student performances, Honor Societyinduction, recognition programs, school sponsoreddances, etc.
Prom Attire
All male students must wear a tuxedo or a suit.Khaki pants and a sports jacket are not suitablefor the occasion.Dress shoes are worn with prom attire, not tennisshoes or boots.Walking canes, sunglasses, do-rags, etc. are notacceptable accessories.Beautiful prom gowns must be within theguidelines of appropriate dress.Extreme bareness is not acceptableStrapless dresses should display good taste.Slits in the gown/dress can be no higher thanthe knee.Cut-out designs in the dress are nothigh-school friendly.Bare midriffs (a two-piece dress) are notacceptable.
Health Services
 Acertified registered nurse practitioner (CRNP)is available to students. The role of the CRNP isholistic and offers expanded student health servicesin addition to the Pennsylvania School Code ofrequired mandates. The CRNP’s office is locatednear the library in the commons area of the first floor.
Medication
 All medication (prescription and/or over the counterdrugs) must be brought to the nurse practitioner’soffice. A Consent for Medication form must becompleted by the parent/guardian for over thecounter medication. A separate consent formmust be completed by the parent/ guardian andphysician for prescription drugs. No medicine maybe brought to school without the nurse practitioner’sknowledge.
Pupil Services
Counselors are available in Room 108, the PupilServices Office, to assist you in academic, personal,and vocational matters. Your counselor will provideyou with an appointment cardif a conference isnecessary.
Cafeteria
Your cafeteria is located on the first floor in theSouth House. Lunch and breakfast are served daily. Applications for free and reduced lunches are
