 April 30, 2009Dear Parents and Guardians,In January 2002, President Bush signed into law the
No Child Left Behind Act
, which calls forchanges in public education. One requirement of the new law is that schools issue annual“report cards” to parents to inform them of how their child’s school is doing.I am pleased to provide you with South Middle School’s report card for 2008-2009. It containsa great deal of information about our school. The report card has two sections. The“Highlights” section summarizes information about the qualifications of our staff, the academicperformance of our students and the quality of our programs. Following the “Highlights” areseveral pages of charts that give more detailed information, mostly about South Middle Schoolstudents’ performance on the MCAS tests. After looking over our report card, I hope you’ll agree that we have a lot to be proud of at SouthMiddle School. We’re happy to be able to share this information with you and I look forward totalking with you about it. Highlights
Our staff is highly qualifie
 All of our teachers and other professional staff members are licensed by the MassachusettsDepartment of Education.
 All of our academic teachers are “highly qualified” according to the federal definition,meaning that they have demonstrated competence in the subjects that they teach.
Our students perform well
 A higher percentage of South Middle School students scored in the Advanced andProficient categories on the 2008 MCAS English Language Arts and Mathematics tests thanstudents statewide.
The state rated South’s MCAS results as “Very High” in English Language Arts and “High”in Mathematics.
 According to the state, as a whole school, South Middle School is making “Adequate Yearly Progress” (AYP) on the MCAS in both English Language Arts and Mathematics.
