[COURSE INFORMATION]
Course explores key directors and texts of the post-1990 (South) Korean Cinema. Blending film aesthetics with socio-cultural criticism, the class will survey a wide variety of Korean film alongside socio-political contexts the nation has faced. The general course objective is to equip students with knowledge and concepts needed for comprehensive understanding of contemporary Korean society and cinema/visual cultures. Class consists mainly of lecture, discussion, screening (clips) and will occasionally hold student presentations and tests.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Regular attendance, participation, small group discussion, screening (clips), student presentations and tests.
Attendance & Participation (30 %): Regular attendance and active class participation are expected and mandatory. Failure to attend classes will adversely impact the students grade for the course. Missed test/presentation may NOT be made up and full class participation points will NOT be rewarded to those missing class. Introducing Director/Genre (15% x 2 = 30 %): Two group presentations on designated directors or genres. Each group will have a 10-15 minute PowerPoint presentation focusing on stylistics/thematics, codes & conventions, filmographic & biographic information.
GRADING POLICY
Final Exams (40 %): Final exam is scheduled for the last day of the class. Questions will be based on lecture, reading, discussion, and screenings. Test format incldude multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short essay types.

INSTRUCTORS PROFILE
JungBong Choi is Assistant Professor in the Department of Cinema Studies, New York University where he teaches theories of cultural globalization, trans-national media/cinema/popular cultures, and the political economy of digital technologies. He authored Digitalization of Television in Japan: State, Economy, and Discourse (2008) and edited Globalization, Television and Japan (2010), Unsettling the National in Korean Cinema (2011), and Of Transnational-Korean Cinematrix (2012). His new book Global K-pop Fanthropology (in Korean) and a co-edited volume K-pop: the International Rise of the Korean Pop Music Industry will be published respectively in 2014
