BASIC ASPECTS OF PROTECTION

Alt!o%#! it is possi-le to eliminate fa%lts to a lar#er de#ree> -y caref%l system desi#n> caref%l ins%lation coordination> efficient operation and maintenance> it is o-"io%sly not possi-le to ens%re cent percent relia-ility and t!erefore possi-ility of fa%lts m%st -e accepted? and t!e e&%ipment are to -e protected a#ainst t!e fa%lts. To protect t!e e&%ipment> it is necessary to detect t!e fa%lt condition> so t!at t!e e&%ipment can -e isolated from t!e fa%lt dama#e. T!is f%nction is performed -y a relay. +n ot!er constantly meas%rin# t!e electrical &%antities> it!o%t any ords> protecti"e

relays are de"ices t!at detect a-normal conditions in electrical circ%its -y !ic! are different %nder !ic! may c!an#e !ic! normal and fa%lty conditions. T!e -asic &%antities

Current Transformer: T!ese are %sed for meas%rin# protection p%rpose since it is not possi-le to meas%re "ery !i#! c%rrents directly> it ill -e

Voltage Transformer: T!ese are also %sed for meas%rin# p%rpose and protecti"e relayin# p%rpose. Since it is not practica-le to meas%re and monitor !i#! and e9tra !i#! "olta#es t!ey are stepped do n to 1108 and t!e secondary "olta#e is meas%red and monitored. Relay time: +t is t!e inter"al -et een t!e occ%rrence of t!e fa%lt and clos%re of relay contact. Back up Protection: A protecti"e system intended to s%pplement t!e main protection in case t!e latter s!o%ld -e ineffecti"e> or to deal t!e operatin# @ones of t!e main protection. relays. T!ese relays are non<directional and are simple type of relays. *9amples of attracted armat%re type relays are #i"en in Fig. 1.7. '.... Time 1ag Relays: T!ese are commonly %sed in protection sc!emes as a means of time discrimination. T!ey are also fre&%ently %sed in control> delayed a%to< reclosin# and alarm sc!eme to allo time for t!e re&%ired se&%ence of operations to ta0e place> and to meas%re t!e d%ration of t!e initial condition to ens%re t!at it is not merely transient. 8ario%s met!ods are %sed to o-tain a time la# -et een t!e initiation of t!e relay and t!e operation of its contact mec!anism. T!ese incl%des #earin#> permanent ma#net dampin#> friction> t!ermal means or R.'. circ%its. +n some cases t!e time la# in operation of t!e contacts is ac!ie"ed -y a separate mec!anism released -y a "olta#e operated elements. T!e release mec!anism may -e an attracted armat%re or solenoid and pl%n#er. T!e operatin# time of s%c! relay is independent of t!e "olta#e applied to t!e relay coil. To a"oid t!is> relays are to -e cleaned periodically. +n #eneral> o"erload relays sense o"er load -y means f t!ermal element. /oose electrical connections can ca%se e9tra !eat and may res%lt in false operation of t!e relay. To a"oid t!is> all t!e relay connections are to -e ti#!tened e"ery no and t!en.

To confirm t!at t!e relay operation at t!e partic%lar settin# %nder partic%lar conditions for !ic! t!e relay is meant for operatin#> e s!o%ld perform n%m-er of tests on t!e relays. F%ality control is #i"en foremost consideration in man%fact%rin# of relay. Tests can -e #ro%ped into follo in# fi"e classesB 1. Acceptance test 2. 'ommissionin# test 3. )aintenance tests 4. Repair tests 5. )an%fact%rers tests '.2.' 0cceptance test Acceptance tests are #enerally performed in presence of t!e c%stomer in t!e la-oratory or -y t!e c%stomer !imself. pro"e t!e desi#n and are not recommended for normal prod%ction relays. 2.
