DearNeighbors,Lastmonththereweretwobike-vehicleaccidentsinRedwoodShores.Basedonincompleteinformation,thefirstaccident,whichwasnotfatal,involvedachildandhegrandfatherwhowerestruckbyacarnear ShearwaterParkwayandMindanaowhile bikingtoSandpiperElementarySchool.Intheotheraccident,which,tragically,wasfatal,thebicyclistwashitandkilledbyatractor-trailertruckattheintersectionof ShorewayandRedwoodShoresParkway.Itmightbetemptingtoassignfaultintheseincidents,butthatwouldmissthemainpoint,whichisthatbikesandcarsareadangerousmix-forthecyclist!!-especiallywhenanyofthepartiesisinattentive,inconsiderateorjustplanreckless.CompoundingthesituationinRedwoodShoresisourcar-orientedlifestyle,whichisencouragedbywideParkways

TheBelmont-RedwoodShoresSchoolDistrictandtheRedwoodShorescommunityshareintheexcitementofbuildingthenewschoolonShearwaterParkway.Afterthesummerground-break-ing,theadministrationoffices,classroomsandmultiuseroomhavequicklyappearedonsite.Itstimetogiveanametothecampus.Weencourageyoutothinkthoughtfullyaboutanameandgivereasonsforyoursuggestion.FormsforsuggestednamesareavailableatSandpiperCommunityCenterandthroughtheRedwoodShoresCommunityAssociationaswellasdistribu-tionthroughtheschools.NominationswillbeacceptedatSandpiper,Nesbit,theSandpiperCommunityCenter,orthedistrictofficeonHallmarkDriveinBelmont.ByNovember20th,weshouldhaveallthesuggestednamescollectedandaNamingCommittee,composedofstaffandcommunitymem-bers,willreviewthesuggestionsandmakearecommendationfortheschoolboardsapproval.

overthepipeline,asitwillbeonlypartiallysubmerged.ThismaybeaparticularissueforresidentslivingonpartsoShorebirdIsland,andalongthenorthernsideofthemainlagoon,foraboutamonthwhiletheShorebirdIslandareaisbeingdredged.OnceShorebirdIslandlagoonisdredged,thepipelinewillberemovedandboatswillhaveeasyaccess.Thecontractorwillhavefloatingbuoysandmarkersattachedtothepipelinetoclearlyindicateitslocation.*TherewillonlybepartialdredginginthelagoonbetweenLagunaPointeandCaliforniaHarborCourt.SomepartsofthislagooncontainthecompoundPAH(poly-cyclicaromatichydrocarbonslikelyfromroadwayrunoff)inlevelshigherthanisallowedforuseaswetlandrestorationfill.Suchsedimentwouldhavetobemechanicallydredgedandtruckedtoanalternatedisposalsite,atasignificantlyhigherexpensethandisposalinAreaH.Becauseofthishigherexpense,itisnotfinanciallyfeasibleatthistimefortheCitytodredgethoseportionsofthislagoonthereforeonlyspeci-fiedsectionsofthislagoonwillbedredged.TheCity’sintentistodetermineawaytofinancethecompletedredgingofthisareaatalaterdate,oncefundsarefullyavailable,likelysever-alyearsaway.MuchmoreinformationanddiagramsareonlineattheCity’sprojectwebsiteatwww.redwoodcity.org/shoresdredging.There,youcanalsosignuptoreceiveperiodicupdatesviaemail.TheCityanditscontractorwishtothanktheRedwoodShorescommunityforitspatienceandunderstandingasthislagoondredgingprojectgetsunderwaytheresultwillbeanimprovedlagoonthatmorepositivelycontributestothebeautyandprideofRedwoodShores,aswellasthequalityof lifeofitsresidents.

nOctober,theCityCouncilapprovedacontractwiththefirmAquaticEnvironmentstoperformdredgingincertainlagoonsatRedwoodShores.Thisworkwillhelpspeci-fiedareasofthelagoontobetterflushandthereforeimprovewaterqualityandappearance(pleaseseewww.redwoodcity.org/shoresdredging).Aspartoftheoutreachtoaffectedresidents,inadditiontoadirectmailflyerandanarticleinlastmonthsPilot,theRedwoodShoresCommunityAssociationandRedwoodCityhostedaprojectcommunityinformationmeetingonThursday,October22,2009,duringwhichresidentsheardfromandaskedquestionsofCitystaff,contractors,andcon-sultants.Atthatmeeting,staffprovidedanoverviewoftheproject,outlinedthescopeofwork,andpresentedatentativeschedule.Hereisabriefoverview:*ThetwoareastobedredgedarethelagoonaroundShorebirdIsland,andportionsofthelagoonnearAreaHbetweenLagunaPointeandCaliforniaHarborCourt.*It’sexpectedthatthecontractorwillbeginprepworkthefirstweekofNovember,andstartactualdredgingabitlaterinthemonth(amorespecificschedulewillbeavailableontheprojectwebsiteinNovember).*Theworkhourswillbe7:30am4:00pm,weekdaysonly.*Whilethecontractorhasupto180daystocompletethework,it’sexpectedthatthedredgingwillbecompletedbyJanuary31st.*Dredgingwillbedonewithoneortwosmallbargeswhichwillhydraulicallypumpthesedimentfromthelagoonfloor,sendingitthroughapipelinerunningalongthemainlagoon,tobedepositedintoAreaHaspartofthewetlandrestoration.Thekeyissuesraisedbyresidentsattendingthemeeting,andsummariesofstaffresponses,were:*Theexpectednoiselevelsofthedredgemachineryandboosterpump.Somelevelofnoiseisunavoidable,butitistemporary.Thecontractorestimatesthatthenoiseofthepumpsissimilartoamid-sizedpickuptruckengine.Theexpectednoiselevelisapproximately80-85decibelsat20feetdistancefromthemachinery.Themachineryutilizesmufflersandisenclosedtominimizenoise.Weaskforresidents’patiencethroughoutthisproject.*Inabilitytolaunchboatsfromcertainareaswhilethetemporarypipelineisinplace.Whileitsinplace,itwillnotbepossibleforboatstocross
