February 25, 2008 TO ALL PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND SCHOOLTEACHERSIsland Literary Awards Deadline March 7 The deadline for entries to the Island Literary Awards is fast approaching. The ILAs will take place on April 27, 2008 at The Guild in Charlottetown. PEI Lt.Governor Barbara Hagerman will open the event; CBC Mainstreet host Matt Rainnieand Island comedian Patrick Ledwell will reprise their roles as emcees extraordinaire;and there will be entertaining readings from the best of Island writers. The Island Literary Awards have two categories especially for young people; theAliant Creative Writing Awards for Young People and the Department of Education Young Writer’s Award. There are no entry fees for either of these two categories. Of course, older students are welcome to submit work to any of the other categories,which include Creative Nonfiction, Poetry, Children’s Literature and Short Story;however, there will be a $15 entry fee for submissions to these categories.DETAILS ABOUT CATEGORIES SPECIFICALLY FOR YOUNG PEOPLE:Aliant Creative Writing Awards for Young PeopleStudents may write on the topic of their choice and submit in one of four sub-categories: Early Elementary, Late Elementary, Junior High and Senior High. Amaximum of five pages of poetry, or a five-page short story, will constitute an entry.Longer submissions will NOT be accepted. There is no entry fee. Prizes: First: $100;Second $75; Third $50 will be awarded in EACH sub-category. The Department of Education Young Writer’s AwardStudents attending intermediate school (grades 7– 9 inclusive) may enter a story, apoem or a series of poems on a topic of their choice. A maximum of 10 pages willconstitute an entry. There is no entry fee. Prizes: First $75; Second $50; Third $25GENERAL RULES FOR STUDENTS: Deadline for entries: Entries must be postmarked or submitted by hand to the PEICouncil of the Arts, 115 Richmond Street, Charlottetown, PE, CIA IH7 by 4 p.m.,Friday, March 7, 2008. Those postmarked or delivered later will not be eligible.Participants may submit as many entries as they wish in one or all categories. Awriter may only win one prize per category.For each manuscript entered, participants must complete a separate entry form. The work must be original and unpublished.FormatEACH entry MUST include:(a) An entry form/covering page which lists the title of the entry, the category,author’s name(s), address, phone number, the school’s name, name of teacher andthe grade of the author(s).
