Guidance on Providing Culturally Appropriate Food atRedbridge Homes Events
Preparation
For cultural and hygienic reasons, meat dishes and sandwiches should beprepared separately from non-meat dishes. Pork should be separatelyprepared from other dishes.

Serving

Food should be labelled. If it Halal or Kosher that should be indicated.
The food available should not be predominantly pork based. Thereforeham sandwiches, sausage rolls, and sausages should not constitute themajor part of the food available
Pork based products should not be on the same plates as non-porkbased products. Therefore tuna sandwiches, or even non-pork meats likechicken, should not be on the same plates as ham sandwiches.
Meat based sandwiches should not be on the same plates as non-meatproducts.
If possible cheeses should not contain rennet or gelatine. If they do thisshould be indicated.

Religions are only listed in this section if they have specific dietary requirements.Practical Considerations for Managers

As several religious groups do not drink tea or coffee, managers should try to ensure thatthere is as wide selection of beverages - caffeine/tannin free herbal teas and fruit juices(clearly marked) – available in the office, cafeteria and at training events.

Managers may consider arranging events at venues where alcohol is not served widely,e.g. not at Pubs or Wine bars. An inappropriate choice of venues can serve to inhibit manystaff from participating at particular events. Alternative venues could be suggested. Allfood served at office events should always be very clearly labelled and a wide range of vegetarian food should always be available.

The cow is regarded as themost sacred animal to the Hindus. The pig is considered unclean so no pork or pork relatedproducts are eaten. Food that has come into contact with other meat products will not beconsumed. Any preparation and presentation of foods should be clearly labelled and meatfree items should be separately offered.Islam
