Speed News
June 6, 2006 Editor: Shelly Willingham
This is the second part in a three part  series dealing with up coming changes. This article focuses on the new laptoprequirement for the freshman class of 2007
Of the changes coming to theSpeed School of Engineering, per-haps the one that will have themost impact on students is the in-troduction of mandatory TabletPCs for the Fall 2007 freshmanclass. This requirement affects
only
that class, and does not re-quire that any current students pur-chase a Tablet PC for their classes. The rationale behind this decisionlies in several ideas. The faculty atthe Speed School of Engineeringare eager to ensure that Speed staysahead of the technological curve, and with many universities adopt-ing laptop requirements, it seemeda good time to start one here. Ad-ditionally, there currently existssoftware that allows for greater classroom collaboration betweenfaculty andstudents: thissoftware iscalledDyKnow, andhas the poten-tial to revolu-tionize theclassroom experience.Acquiring a Tablet PC before theFall 2007 semester begins will bethe responsibility of the incomingstudent. A set of guidelines for this purchase will be distributed toall incoming students, and thesestudents willlikely beasked tochoose be-tween severaldifferentmanufacturers and models.Though there has been no officialdeclaration regarding which brand(s) will be chosen, Speed admini-stration has been suggesting thatcurrent students interested in pur-chasing tablet PCs should look intothose made by HP. Costs for Tab-let PCs depend on the model, buttend to be about $200-$300 morethan the equivalent laptop offered by that manufacturer.Though the introduction of theseTablet PCs has the potential to

Hey societies! Yeah you, societies, I am talking to you! This is your space. Don’t forget that you can advertisehere. Make an announcement about meetings, speakers,or special events. You could even announce your newofficers.Don’t let this space go to waste! All you have to do toget something in here is shoot me an email no later than6pm on Monday night. My email is speednews@speedcouncil.org. If you can’tget to a computer, just drop off a written copy in thecouncil office (JS 105) and I will get it.Let the whole school know what you are up to!I know, I know, you haven't seen much from council yetthis summer. But I can tell you that they are working onit. Right now the volleyball league is going on. Even if you are not playing you can come and see the skills of your fellow classmates. Games are on Tuesdays andThursdays from 6pm to about 9pm at the volleyball court beside the BP in Cardinal Park.Other than that, council is working on some excitingthings for the rest of the summer. So watch out for those! If you want to know what is going on in council all youhave to do is attend meeting on Thursdays at 12:20 in JS100.See you there!
revolutionize classroom learning, there are a number of issues that the Speed administration will have toovercome in order to make the endeavor successful.Of these, the most important are infrastructure, se-curity, and usage. Infrastructure concerns involvethe question of access to power (imagine 100 stu-dents in JS100 attempting to charge their laptops atonce) and the ability of the University's wirelessnodes to handle the increased load when hundredsof new computers flood the airwaves. Security con-cerns revolve mostly around protecting studentscarrying expensive tablets from thieves, since givingeach Speed student a laptop makes these students aviable target. Finally, usage concerns are based onthe question of whether each professor will integratethis new form of learning into their lectures; many professors have been teaching the same way for years, and asking them to change their current (andoften working) methods may be too much for many. With all that in mind, how can you get ready for thischange? As was previously stated, there is no re-quirement for current students to purchase a TabletPC. However, current students are not prohibitedfrom buying and using Tablet PCs, and for thosewho are interested in the technology, I would rec-ommend reading the following article. At the endof the article there are several links for more infor-mation as well as reviews.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tablet_pc

Letter from Shelly
Howdy! It’s the summer and we are in school. Fun, right? So whatis there to do to relieve the summer time blues? It all depends on your price range. If you are like me andfree sounds good, there are several things. You can get agroup and go down to Waterfront Park and play Frisbee or even kick ball. Then you have the volleyball courts oncampus and on Cardinal Park.If sports are not your thing there are free concerts down atFourth Street Live (check out Around Town on pg 1).If you want to send a little bit of money then there is Ken-tucky Kingdom or even the Louisville Zoo.Even though we are stuck here all summer there are plentyof things to do to get rid of your summertime blues. If any-thing call your friends and tell them they need to make aroad trip to Louisville to entrain you.Hope you have fun this summer!~Shelly :)
