Speed News
September 5, 2006 Editor: Shelly Willingham
You are just out of class inSackett and have 10 minutes tomake it to Humanities. You caneither go down to the crosswalk and wait for the walk signal or  play “Speed School Frogger” andcross all 4 lanes of traffic whenits clear. If you are a frequentFrogger than you might want totry the crosswalk. On Thursday August 24th,Governor Ernie Fletcher an-nounced that the University of Louisville received a $2 millioncheck to improve the safety of Eastern Parkway.According to the press releasefrom Governor Fletcher’s office, these improvements will serveseveral purposes. One will be tomake Eastern Parkway safer for  both pedestri-ans and for motorist. Thesecond will be to improvethe aestheticsof this side of campus. Thefinal purposewill be to “…’promote walkingand healthier lifestyle activities ina safe environment,’ concludedTransportation Cabinet SecretaryBill Nighbert.”The renovations also includemaking improvements that willalert truck drivers of the under- pass at Third and Eastern. Beingengineering students, most of ushave either witnessed, heard, or have seen the aftermath of semitrucks failing to make it under the bridge. Not only is this not safe for thetrucks but when a truck does getstuck, traffic is backed up or re-routed in this area. For exampleon October 18th of last year atruck got stuck during the morn-ing rush hour. I was comingdown Third to go to the graphicslot and had to turn around go back to Cardinal, go around cam- pus and up to Central so I couldcome back down Third so I couldget in to the graphics lot.To help prevent this from hap- pening, the plans include an over-head warning system locatedsouth of the railroads.

Ah, Labor Day weekend, the end of summer andthe start of fall. Fall, changing leaves, colder weather, and FOOTBALL. Everyone knows thatfootball includes tailgating. So what all does tailgating include? Well thereare a couple of places to tailgate. You can find amore adult and established crowd in the parking lotof Papa Johns stadium and the gravel lots of OldCardinal Stadium or the college co-ed crowd in thegrass lot of Old Cardinal Stadium.I decided to go out to the grass lots to see whatall tailgating included. The group that I was withhad people arriving at 8am; they even fired up thegrill to cook breakfast. Along with the grill theyhad corn hole and music playing allday. Most of the time you could find people setting around talking, play-ing corn hole, or throwing a footballor a Frisbee. While walking around I noticed that this year corn hole was a favorite among tailgaters as well asgrills and music. There was even a group with aslip and slide.About 30 minutes before kick off you can find alarge group of people heading down to the stadium. This way you have a place to park and won’t haveto fight the stadium traffic. With just about every home football game youcan find fans tailgating in the lots of Old CardinalStadium. It is $5 a carload to park and there is plenty of places to park and have a good time!

This year there have been several changes to food ser-vices, several of which have occurred across the street atMITZI's. The most notable changes include the disappear-ance of the pasta bar and individual pizzas from the lunchmenu, and the breakfast bar from the morning menu. Duringthe first few days of class, only a salad bar sat in their place atlunch; nothing was evident in replacement for the breakfastfoods. When news came of these missing items, your SpeedSchool senators spoke up, resulting in a meeting betweenSGA VP Activities Justin Tooley and campus food servicesmanagement. As a result, pasta has been reinstated, along with extra breakfast foods in the morning; however, these foods are nolonger self serve and do not satisfy some students' need tohave hot food that can quickly be grabbed when on the go.Your senators are very interested in hearing your commentson the current food situation at MITZI's. Any feedback will be reported to the proper parties, in the hopes of creating theoptimal food selection at MITZI's. If you have comments, please send them to Speed Senator Matt Pulley ( pul-ley.matt@gmail.com
